A Rat Muscle Pain Model Based on Intramuscular Formalin Injection

Elaheh Erami

Background: Musculoskeletal pain is a major clinical problem, but researchers lack viable animal models to study this phenomenon. However, formalin injections are widely used to produce tonic and neurogenic nociceptive responses in rodents. Rodents can present a potential animal model for pain. Objectives: To develop a muscle pain model with intramuscular injection of formalin in rats. Materials and Methods: We injected formalin intramuscularly at different concentrations (50 µl; 2%, 4% and 8%) and compared them to its plantar surface subcutaneous injection (50 µl; 2%). Pain responses were scored in the first phase (1-7 minute), interphase (8-14 minute) and the second phases of 2A (15-60 minute) and 2B (61-90 minute). Results: After intramuscular and subcutaneous formalin injection, rat...

Roghyeh Sadeghi International Branch, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, IR Iran

Background Acupuncture has recently received considerable attention around the world due to its cost-effectiveness, few side effects, and well-established analgesic properties. Objectives The present study aimed to identify the factors that might lead to using acupuncture for pain relief. Patients and Methods This qualitative study was conducted using conventional content analysis method. The study population included eight patients and six highly experienced acupuncturists, who were able to express their opinion and were willing to take part in the study. The inclusion criteria for patients were being under treatment with acupuncture for pain relief or a history of treatment during the last year and age > 18 years. All highly trained acupuncturists with minimum of one-year active expe...

A Study on Musculoskeletal Disorders and Personal and Occupational Risk Factors among Surgeons

A Tirgar Babol University of Medical Sciences, Babol, Iran

Background and purpose: Surgery is a high risk profession owing to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Fine and precise operations cause surgeons to adopt prolonged fixed posture. As there is limited information in this region, the purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of MSDs and personal and occupational risk factors among surgeons in Babol (a northern city in Iran). Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 45 surgeons during 2011 using a questionnaire in three parts including: Demographic and occupational data, Nordic standardized musculoskeletal disorders questionnaire (NMQ), and Body Discomfort Assessment technique. The working posture during operation was assessed by Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA). The data were analyzed using descr...

First Report on Infant Acute Urticaria after Mother’s Parenteral Use of Meglumine Antimoniate (Glucantime): A Case Report

Omid MOZAFARI

Pentavalent antimonials are still the first drug of choice for the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). Like other treatments, they can cause adverse reactions including musculoskeletal pain , gastrointestinal disturbances, and mild to moderate headaches. In this paper, we report the first case of an infant who developed acute urticaria after her mother’s parenteral use of meglumine antimoniate (glucantime).

Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders among Administrative Employees of Kerman University of Medical Sciences

FARZAN MADADIZADEH PhD student of Biostatistics, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran

Background: This study examined the factors affecting on musculoskeletal disorders and its frequency among administrative employees of Kerman University of Medical Sciences in 2015. Materials and Method: This cross-sectional study conducted among 300 employees (94% response rate) from different Department of Kerman University of Medical Sciences, Kerman, Iran. The data were collected by standard Nordic questionnaire. We used the binary logistic regression in spss v.16 software to calculate odds ratios and confidence intervals, and chi-square and t tests to investigate the relationship between variables. Results: The highest disorders were in the lower back (41%), shoulder (28%) and the lowest were to the elbow and forearm (5%). Among the different Departments, Health Department S...

Evaluation of the risk of musculoskeletal disorders using Rapid Entire Body Assessment among hairdressers in Khorramabad, Iran, in 2014
Journal of Occupational Health and Epidemiology

S Mahdavi Department of Occupational Health Engineering, School of Health, Lorestan University of Medical Sciences, Khorramabad, Iran.

Background: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) are considered a major factor in health problems, human injuries, and loss of work time. The aim of the present study was to assess the risk of musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) and evaluate the prevalence of MSD among female hairdressers.   Materials and Methods: In this descriptive analytical study, the risk of MSDs was evaluated in 172 female hairdressers using the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) method. Moreover, the prevalence of WRMSDs was investigated using a Nordic questionnaire. All obtained data was analyzed by means of SPSS software, and the logistic regression model .   Results : The results showed that 58.7% of the hairdressers experienced pain in their lower back, 52.3% in their neck, 41.3% in their knees, and ...

Ergonomics Intervention in a Tile Industry- Case of Manual Material Handling
Journal of Research in Health Sciences

Ali Dormohammadi

Background: Manual material handling is one of the major health and safety hazards in industry. This study aims to assess the lifting tasks, before and after intervention using NIOSH lifting equation and Manual Handling Assessment Charts (MAC). Methods: This interventional study was performed in 2011 in a tile manufacturing industry in Hamadan, located in the West of Iran. The prevalence of musculoskeletal discomfort was determined using Nordic musculoskeletal questionnaire. In order to assess the risk factors related to lifting and identify the high-risk activities, MAC and NIOSH lifting equation were used. In intervention phase, we designed a load-carrying cart with shelves capable of moving vertically up and down, similar to scissor lifts. After intervention, the reassessment of ...
