Assessing Rainfall Variability in Jamaica Using CHIRPS: Techniques and Measures for Persistence, Long and Short-Term Trends

چکیده
Jamaica, as a Small Island Developing State (SIDS), is highly vulnerable to weather extremes. As precipitation persistence critical factor in determining the susceptibility of an area risks, this work assesses spatial and temporal variations rainfall Jamaica from 1981 2020, using satellite-based information. The Hurst exponent (H) serial correlation coefficient (SCC) are used evaluate long-term Persistence Threshold (PT) concept introduced provide description characteristics over short periods, specifically, number consecutive days with above or below set threshold value. PT method novel that expands upon Consecutive Dry Days (CDD) Wet (CWD) methods only consider 1 mm. Results show notable decades, overall increasing trend high decreasing low persistence. Geographically, northern mountainous received most persistent study period observed increase extreme events. excess 2001–2010 decade remarkable study, coinciding global unprecedented climate extremes during time. We conclude data viable for understanding modeling trends SIDS like derived useful tool short-term trends, but it just one step toward flood drought risk. Further research will focus on developing indices.

15 صفحه اولSpatial variability of rainfall in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: long and short term characteristics
Spatial variability of both long and short term rainfall in an urban environment in Malaysia was studied using historical monthly and yearly rainfall data and, unique for the humid tropics region, recently collected, short term rainfall data measured with very small time and space resolution. The results for the yearly data indicated some elongation of the spatial structures of rainfall in the ...
متن کاملAssessing variability and long-term trends in burned area by merging multiple satellite fire products
Long term, high quality estimates of burned area are needed for improving both prognostic and diagnostic fire emissions models and for assessing feedbacks between fire and the climate system. We developed global, monthly burned area estimates aggregated to 0.5 spatial resolution for the time period July 1996 through mid-2009 using four satellite data sets. From 2001–2009, our primary data sourc...
متن کاملAnalyzing Impacts of FACTS Devices in Dealing with Short-Term and Long-Term Wind Turbine Faults
More than one hundred countries are using wind energy due to their easy implementation, cheap energy, and high energy efficiency. Implementation of FACTS devices in Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECS) has been dramatically improved due to cooperative and accurate performance of FACTS devices. However, dealing with wind turbine faults promptly is crucial. Short-term and long-term faults may ha...
