Destigmatizing Naloxone: Associations of Perceived Availability on Opioid Use Patterns

چکیده
Naloxone, most commonly known as Narcan, is a potent opioid antagonist that can readily rescue individuals with overdose by displacing the offending agonist from complementary receptors in brainstem. As such, it has saved thousands of lives and increasingly used first responders hospital emergency departments to revive suspected poisoning.1Rando J. Broering D. Use of naloxone for the management of opioid overdose
–Opioid overdose is a potentially life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention, often landing affected individuals into the emergency department. The longstanding treatment for opioid overdose has been naloxone, a pure opioid antagonist that reverses all signs of opioid intoxication. While effective as a reversal agent, naloxone has a half-life which is shorter than all ...
متن کامل[Is the availability of buprenorphine/naloxone therapy for opioid-dependent inmates a necessity? ].
Agonist therapy (OAT) programs in combination with a psychosocial approach are the most effective way to prevent relapse in opioid-dependent patients. These programs reduce morbidity and risk behaviours for HIV transmission and other infections, improve quality of life and retention in treatment, and have a positive impact on antisocial behaviour. They are therefore very useful for prisoners wi...
متن کاملThe effect of naloxone treatment on opioid-induced side effects
BACKGROUND To evaluate the effects of naloxone on opioid-induced side effects, the present meta-analysis was constructed. METHODS Electronic databases including PubMed, EMBASE, and CNKI (China National Knowledge Internet) were used for literature search. Studies on comparison of opioid-side effects between naloxone-treated group and placebo or normal saline-related group were included in the ...
متن کاملCaged naloxone reveals opioid signaling deactivation kinetics.
The spatiotemporal dynamics of opioid signaling in the brain remain poorly defined. Photoactivatable opioid ligands provide a means to quantitatively measure these dynamics and their underlying mechanisms in brain tissue. Although activation kinetics can be assessed using caged agonists, deactivation kinetics are obscured by slow clearance of agonist in tissue. To reveal deactivation kinetics o...
متن کاملOral naloxone reverses opioid-associated constipation.
Opioid-related constipation is one of the most frequent side effects of chronic pain treatment. Enteral administration of naloxone blocks opioid action at the intestinal receptor level but has low systemic bioavailability due to marked hepatic first-pass metabolism. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of oral naloxone on opioid-associated constipation in an intraindividually contro...
