Eye movement abnormalities in essential tremor

Essential tremor (ET) is the most prevalent movement disorder, characterized mainly by an action tremor of the arms. Only a few studies published as yet have assessed oculomotor abnormalities in ET and their results are unequivocal. The aim of this study was to assess the oculomotor abnormalities in ET patients compared with the control group and to find the relationship between oculomotor abno...

Eye movement abnormalities in multiple sclerosis.

Patients with multiple sclerosis commonly describe visual symptoms that result from several eye movement abnormalities that occur from disruption of critical pathways in the brainstem, cerebellum, and cerebral hemispheres. These abnormalities include internuclear ophthalmoplegia, ocular motor palsy, ocular misalignment, pathologic nystagmus, impaired saccades, saccadic intrusions, and impaired ...

Eye Movement Abnormalities in Spinocerebellar Ataxias

SCAs are associated with at least 31 different genetic loci, but the responsible gene is known in only 19 of them. Causative mutations include coding CAG expansions leading to a long polyglutamine (polyQ) tract in the respective proteins (SCA1, 2, 3, 6, 7 and 17), non-coding trinucleotide or pentanucleotide expansions (SCA8, 10, 12 and 31), as well as conventional mutations (SCA5, 11, 13, 14, 1...

Eye movement abnormalities in stiff person syndrome.

The authors describe a 38-year-old woman with stiff person syndrome (SPS) and gaze-holding nystagmus, limited abduction, vertical and horizontal ocular misalignment, deficient smooth pursuit, and impaired saccade initiation. There was no evidence of ocular myasthenia, indicating that abnormalities of ocular motor function can occur as a primary manifestation of SPS, perhaps from depletion of GABA.

Eye movement abnormalities in Joubert syndrome.

PURPOSE Joubert syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by hypoplasia of the midline cerebellum and deficiency of crossed connections between neural structures in the brain stem that control eye movements. The goal of the study was to quantify the eye movement abnormalities that occur in Joubert syndrome. METHODS Eye movements were recorded in response to stationary stimuli and stimuli d...
