Optimal ridge orientation estimator using integrated second directional derivative

In this paper, we discuss a unified theory for and performance evaluation of the ridge direction estimation through the minimization of the integral of the second directional derivative of the gray-level intensity function. The primary emphasis of this paper is on the ridge orientation estimation. The subsequent ridge detection can be performed using the traditional methods of using the zero cr...

Directional Morphological Gradient Edge Detector

In this thesis, the limitations of the conventional morphological gradient (MG) as an edge detector are theoretically analyzed, and three new methods with improved performance are developed. The new methods are analyzed theoretically and demonstrated with both synthetic and real image data. The basic issues regarding edge detection, linear and nonlinear filtering, especially in morphological fi...

Active contour model with gradient directional information: directional snake

Active contours or snakes are an effective edge-based method in segmenting an object of interest. However, the segmented boundary of a moving object in one video frame may lie far from the same moving object in the next frame due to its rapid motion, causing the snake to converge on the wrong edges. To guide the snake toward the appropriate edges, we have added gradient-directional information ...

The Spherical Tensor Gradient Operator

The spherical tensor gradient operator Y l (∇), which is obtained by replacing the Cartesian components of r by the Cartesian components of ∇ in the regular solid harmonic Y l (r), is an irreducible spherical tensor of rank l. Accordingly, its application to a scalar function produces an irreducible spherical tensor of rank l. Thus, it is in principle sufficient to consider only multicenter int...

Optimally Rotation-Equivariant Directional Derivative Kernels

We describe a framework for the design of directional derivative kernels for two-dimensional discrete signals in which we optimize a measure of rotation-equivariance in the Fourier domain. The formulation is applicable to rst-order and higher-order derivatives. We design a set of compact, separable, linear-phase derivative kernels of di erent orders and demonstrate their accuracy.
