Is a Wizard-of-Oz Required for Robot-Led Conversation Practice in a Second Language?

Abstract The large majority of previous work on human-robot conversations in a second language has been performed with human wizard-of-Oz. reasons are that automatic speech recognition non-native conversational is considered to be unreliable and the dialogue management task selecting robot utterances adequate at given turn complex social conversations. This study therefore investigates if robot-led conversation practice pairs adult learners could potentially managed by an autonomous robot. We first investigate how correct understandable transcriptions learner when made state-of-the-art recogniser. find both relatively high word error rate (41%) substantial share (42%) judged incomprehensible or only partially reader. then evaluate utterance selection is, manually based autonomously using (a) predefined sequences utterances, (b) general model selects input preceding utterance, (c) custom-made statistical method trained observations wizard’s choices It shown least acceptable selected wizard most cases (96%), even though ASR have rate. Further, performs as well manual transcriptions. was also found interaction strategy employed, which differed regarding much maintained initiative focus learners, had marginal effects understandability but larger adequateness selection. Autonomous may hence better some strategies.
