Lithium neurotoxicity.

The peripheral and central neurotoxic effects of lithium carbonate are illustrated by 4 case histories. Lithium neurotoxicity is likely to be more common than the literature suggests. Neurological sequelae may be irreversible and may be associated with therapeutic serum levels. Prevention may be facilitated by more stringent case selection, EEG and clinical monitoring and the development of imp...

Lithium neurotoxicity.

Inspite of the advent of newer antimanic drugs, lithium carbonate remains widely used in the treatment and prevention of manic-depressive illness. However care has to be exercised due to its low therapeutic index. The central nervous system and renal system are predominantly affected in acute lithium intoxication and is potentially lethal. The more common side effect involves the central nervou...

Pathological Neurotoxicity with Lithium

Though lithium-induced neurotoxicity usually occurs when serum lithium exceeds 2.0 mEq/1, reports document its occurrence with serum lithium within the therapeutic range (Strayhorn and Nash 1977, Hansen and Amidsen, 1978, Speirs and Hirsch 1978, West and Meltzer 1979). Neurotoxicity has even been described with serum lithium between 0.4 and 0.5 mEq/1 (Hansen and Amidsen 1978). Such may best be ...

Lithium-induced Paradoxical Neurotoxicity-a Risk Factor

Neurotoxicity has even been described with serum lithium between 0.4 and 0.5 mEq/l (Hansen and Amidsen 1978). Many hy...

Long-lasting Lithium Neurotoxicity in an Adolesecent

Acute lithium intoxication is well known. A case of long tasting lithium neurotoxicity in an adolescent male is reported, who showed signs of cerebellar as well as brain stem involvement.
