Real-time detection of ambient aerosols using photothermal interferometry: Folded Jamin interferometer
Work in our laboratory has been directed at the development of a new class of instrumentation that can directly measure ambient aerosol absorption through photothermal interferometry. The hallmark of this approach is its ability to directly measure aerosol absorption without interference from aerosol scattering since the signal originates from the thermal dissipation of the spectrally absorbed ...
متن کاملMeasurement of Absorption Amplification of Coated Particles Using Photothermal Interferometry
Introduction Growth of a transparent coating on top of an absorbing core can result in an increase in the measured mass absorption cross-section for the core. In the case of soot, quantification of the coating-induced amplification is difficult because two processes brought about by the coating process itself have opposite effects on light absorption by the particle: (i) collapse of the fractal...
متن کاملFolded Jamin interferometer: a stable instrument for refractive-index measurements.
A novel two-beam interferometer for the measurement of a refractive index or its induced changes is described. This interferometer consists of only two optical elements and is largely insensitive to their movement. A laboratory prototype has been built. It uses a polarized version of the folded Jamin interferometer to allow for convenient phase adjustment.
متن کاملChromium-doped forsterite: dispersion measurement with white-light interferometry.
Using a Michelson white-light interferometer, we measure the group-delay dispersion and third-order dispersion coefficients, d2(phi)/d(omega)2 and d3(phi)/d(omega)3, of chromium-doped forsterite (Cr:Mg2SiO4) over wavelengths of 1050-1600 nm for light polarized along both the c and b crystal axes. In this interval, the second-order dispersion for the c axis ranges from 35 fs2/mm to -14 fs2/mm, a...
متن کاملScattered-Field FDTD and PSTD Algorithms with CPML Absorbing Boundary Conditions for Light Scattering by Aerosols
As fundamental parameters for polarized-radiative-transfer calculations, the single-scattering phase matrix of irregularly shaped aerosol particles must be accurately modeled. In this study, a scattered-field finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) model and a scattered-field pseudospectral time-domain (PSTD) model are developed for light scattering by arbitrarily shaped dielectric aerosols. The c...
