Quantifying Southern Annular Mode paleo-reconstruction skill in a model framework

چکیده
Abstract. Past attempts to reconstruct the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) using paleo-archives have resulted in records which can differ significantly from one another prior window over proxies are calibrated. This study quantify not only skill with we may expect SAM but also assess contribution of regional bias proxy selection and impact non-stationary proxy–SAM teleconnections on a resulting reconstruction. is achieved pseudoproxy framework output GFDL CM2.1 global climate model. Reconstructions derived precipitation fields perform better, 89 % reconstructions calibrated 61 year able reproduce at least 50 inter-annual variance SAM, as opposed just 25 for surface air temperature (SAT)-derived reconstructions. Non-stationarity teleconnections, defined here, plays small role reconstructions, range reconstruction negligible. most likely be skilful when sourced geographically broad region network size 70 proxies.

Coupled ocean-atmosphere feedback in the Southern Annular Mode
Previous studies have demonstrated that while the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) is an intrinsic feature of the atmosphere it projects strongly onto the ocean and sea-ice properties and circulation. This study investigates the extent of ‘back interaction’ whereby these oceanic SAM anomalies feed back to the atmosphere. A comparison between atmosphere-only and full coupled climate models demonstrat...

Introduction The study of lake sediments has been widely used in recent decades to identify past climate and environmental changes. Lake basins have significant spatial and temporal patterns and provide valuable evidences of physical and chemical changes. However, in general, the climate of the Holocene period has been more stable and uniform than previous glacial and interglacial periods. How...
متن کاملCircumpolar response of Southern Ocean eddy activity to a change in the Southern Annular Mode
[1] Analysis of satellite altimeter data reveals anomalously high Eddy Kinetic Energy (EKE) in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) during the period 2000–2002. Around 2–3 years earlier (1998), the circumpolar eastward wind stress (as quantified by the Southern Annular Mode; SAM) showed a significant positive peak, and we have shown previously that the ACC peaked around 1998 in response. An ...
متن کاملInfluence of the Tropics on the Southern Annular Mode
Perturbations in the southern annular mode (SAM) are shown to be significantly correlated with SST anomalies in the central tropical Pacific during austral winter and SST anomalies in the eastern tropical Pacific during austral summer. The SAM signature in the Pacific sector resembles a tropically forced Rossby wave train, the so-called Pacific–South American pattern, while the signature in the...
متن کاملContributions of External Forcings to Southern Annular Mode Trends
An observed trend in the Southern Hemisphere annular mode (SAM) during recent decades has involved an intensification of the polar vortex. The source of this trend is a matter of scientific debate with stratospheric ozone losses, greenhouse gas increases, and natural variability all being possible contenders. Because it is difficult to separate the contribution of various external forcings to t...
