Resumptive pronouns facilitate processing of long-distance relative clause dependencies in second language English

چکیده
This study provides evidence that resumptive pronouns (RPs) can facilitate the processing of long-distance subject relative clause (RC) dependencies during second language (L2) sentence comprehension, even where they are disallowed in both first (L1) and target language. A test group 29 L1-Korean L2 learners (L2ers) English a control 25 native speakers completed an online self-paced reading task (SPRT) offline acceptability judgment (AJT) designed to whether RPs reflect Interlanguage grammar representations and/or strategy alleviate overload. Analysis SPRT data from response times comprehension question accuracy indicates assisted L2ers, but not speakers, with dependency resolution RCs. For AJT data, proficiency effect was observed whereby some lower-proficiency higher-proficiency ones or tended prefer over gaps The implications these findings plans for future research discussed.

Tsimpli and Dimitrakopoulou (2007) observed that uninterpretable features are unavailable in second language (L2) acquisition after the critical period. In this paper, we verify this claim by providing evidence from Persian speaking learners of English as an L2 on the status of resumptive pronouns (RPs) as uniterpretable features. Unlike English which does not allow RPs, Persian shows various b...
متن کاملTraceless relatives: Agrammatic comprehension of relative clauses with resumptive pronouns
Individuals with agrammatic aphasia fail to interpret reversible movement-derived sentences. According to the Trace Deletion Hypothesis, this impairment in comprehension results from the deletion of traces of phrasal movement. In order to test this hypothesis, we compared object relatives with a trace to identical object relatives that are not derived by syntactic movement and do not include a ...
متن کاملThe English relative clause
A computer grammar is described which includes most of the English relative-clause constructions. It is written in the form of a left-to-right phrase-structure grammar with discontinuous constituents and subscripts, which carry such syntactic restrictions as number and verb government category. The motivation for the hierarchy of syntactic choices and for the use of discontinuous constituents i...
