The dexamethasone suppression test as a predictor of sleep deprivation antidepressant effect.
An abnormal dexamethasone suppression test (DST) result, a sensitive and specific marker for endogenous depression, was found to be associated with an antidepressant response to sleep deprivation in patients who met DSM-III criteria for Major Depressive Episode regardless of whether they met criteria for melancholia or psychotic subtypes of this disorder. These findings support previous reports...

Endogenous depressives with abnormal dexamethasone suppression tests (DSTs) respond better to somatic antidepressant treatments than those with normal DSTs. Whether the DST also aids in the selection of specific antidepressants has not been determined. A pilot report suggested that patients with abnormal DSTs might be noradrenaline-deficient and respond preferentially to imipramine or desiprami...

The mood-improving effect of sleep deprivation (SD) in depression is even today still not fully understood. Despite the fact that mood and cognitive functions are lowered by prolonged sleep loss and despite convincing data that insomnia is a strong risk factor for subsequent depression,(1) acute SD for one night or even partial SD in the second half of the night improves mood in about 60% of de...

Ten patients treated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) only were followed with serial sleep polysomnographic recordings and dexamethasone suppression tests (DSTs). Both biological correlates of depression showed improvement with ECT. The use of serial sleep measures and serial DSTs in monitoring the clinical response to ECT is discussed.
