The microcredit continuum: From ‘smart economics’ to holistic programming

The ability of microcredit programmes to empower women remains highly contested, with studies alternatively championing their worth or denouncing ineffectiveness. This article examines why there are such differences opinion as the value programming for women's empowerment. Through using a qualitative analysis interviews and focus group discussions self-help participants in West Bengal, this shows that current varies widely. Results from study show were different empowerment outcomes based on which approach was implemented. further indicate regardless model employed, is no substitution welfare creation employment. therefore concludes exists along continuum, ‘smart economics’ approaches more holistic gender focused approaches.
