phosphorus uptake efficiency in corn, sugar beet and groundnut

چکیده

abstract plant species differ in their ability to grow at low available p soils in other words, plant species differ in p use efficiency at low p supply. this ability can be investigated by comparing p uptake efficiency of plants and relative effective factors. a pot experiment was carried out in the growth chamber and sugar beet, maize and groundnut were grown in a low available p soil in a completely randomized design with three p fertilizer levels of low, medium and high. three harvests were performed at two different growth periods. the results showed that at low p supply, sugar beet was the most efficient plant among three species as it showed the highest relative yield. the higher p use efficiency of sugar beet was due to a higher p uptake efficiency. phosphorus uptake for sugar beet was 29 mg p plant-1 while those for maize and groundnut were 19 and 0.8 mg p plant-1, respectively. the main reason for higher p uptake efficiency of sugar beet was its higher p influx as compared to maize and groundnut. under low p supply during the first growing period, p influx of sugar beet was higher than that of maize and groundnut by factor 4 and 22, respectively. finally, the higher p use efficiency of sugar beet was due to a higher p uptake efficiency which in turn was due to a high p influx.

Sucrose uptake and compartmentation in sugar beet taproot tissue.

Active sucrose uptake by discs of mature sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L. cv GW-D2 and USH-20) root tissue shows a biphasic dependence on external sucrose. At concentrations up to 20 millimolar sucrose, the active uptake mechanism appears to approach saturation, with an apparent K(m) of 3.6 millimolar. At higher external sucrose concentrations, a linear dependence becomes obvious indicating the pro...

Uptake and distribution of N-phosphonomethylglycine in sugar beet plants.

Glyphosate (N-phosphonomethylglycine) was readily transported in sugar beet plants (Beta vulgaris L., Klein E type, monogerm). Concentrations in sink leaves reached 2.5 to 13.7 micromolar in 10 hours from a 15 millimolar solution supplied to one mature leaf. Distribution of glyphosate followed that of [(3)H]sucrose used as a marker for materials transported by phloem, indicating that this is th...

ABA Uptake in Source and Sink Tissues of Sugar Beet.

The mode of abscisic acid (ABA) uptake was studied in excised leaf and root tissue discs of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.). Discs were incubated in buffered medium that contained 1 mm CaCl(2) and [(14)C]ABA. The sensitivity of ABA uptake to metabolic inhibitors and temperature indicated that the ABA transport system had an energy-dependent component. Energy-dependent uptake was greater in leaf t...

Inhibition of water uptake in sugar beet roots by ammonia.

Ammonium sulfate, ammonium carbonate or ammonia gas inhibited water uptake in sugar beet roots whenever the pH was sufficiently high to cause the production of ammonia. When ammonia was removed by aeration, inhibition of the water uptake by roots was rapidly reversed. ATP at 0.2 mm appeared to either wholly or partially prevent the ammonia-induced inhibition of water uptake by roots. ATP may be...

Phosphorus Concentration, Uptake and Dry Matter Yield of Corn Hybrids

This study aims to quantify the phosphorus (P) concentration in the commercially adapted ten corn hybrids in South Dakota and to determine if selection can be carried out for these traits to develop useful inbred lines; to determine the effect of planting densities on P concentrations and dry matter (DM) yields. Results showed that hybrid were significantly differences for percent phosphorus. H...
