چکیده

The problem of consciousness is one of the most important problems in science as well as in philosophy. There are different philosophers and different scientists who define it and explain it differently. As far as our knowledge of consciousness is concerned, ‘consciousness’ does not admit of a definition in terms of genus and differentia or necessary and sufficient condition. In this paper I shall explore the very idea of machine consciousness. The machine consciousness has offered causal explanation to the ‘how’ and ‘what’ of consciousness, but they failed to explain the ‘why’ of consciousness. Their explanation is based on the ground that consciousness is causally dependent on the material universe and that of all, consciousness phenomena can be explained by mapping the physical universe. Again, this mechanical/epistemological theory of consciousness is essentially committed to scientific world view, which cannot avoid metaphysical implication of consciousness.

Machine Consciousness of Mind Model CAM

Mind model consciousness and memory (CAM) is a biologically inspired mind model, which is a general framework for human-level intelligent systems. Consciousness module plays very important role in mind model CAM. This paper presents architecture of machine consciousness containing awareness, attention, motivation, metacognition, introspective learning and global work‐ space modules. The propose...

Artificial Consciousness1

Artificial consciousness, sometimes labeled as machine consciousness, is the attempt to model and implement those aspects of human cognition which are identified with the often elusive and controversial phenomenon of consciousness (Aleksander 2008; Chella and Manzotti 2009). It does not necessarily try to reproduce human consciousness as such, insofar as human consciousness could be unique due ...

Experimental Methods for Unraveling the Mind–Body Problem: The Phenomenal Judgment Approach

A rigorous approach to the study of the mind–body problem is suggested. Since humans are able to talk about consciousness (produce phenomenal judgments), it is argued that the study of neural mechanisms of phenomenal judgments can solve the hard problem of consciousness. Particular methods are suggested for: (1) verification and falsification of materialism; (2) verification and falsification o...

The Operative Mind: a functional, computational and modelling approach to machine consciousness

The functional capabilities that consciousness seems to provide to biological systems can supply valuable principles in the design of more autonomous and robust technical systems. These functional concepts keep a notable similarity to those underlying the notion of operating system in software engineering, which allows us to specialize the computer metaphor of the mind into that of the operatin...

Technology in Support of Returning: From Conscious Doing to Consciously Being

Virtual reality (VR) represents a turning point in technological development and human-computer interaction, since it allows abstract information to be experienced and acted upon as concrete objects and events. The interplay between consciousness, reasoning and action is reconsidered in the light of what is now possible with VR technology. Such technology provides tools for investigating the na...

Virtual Machinery and Evolution of Mind (Part 1)

The idea of implementing one Turing machine in another can be seen as a precursor of the now familiar idea of a virtual machine running in a physical machine. Some features of virtual machinery that are potentially relevant to explaining the evolution of mind and consciousness are discussed, including their causal powers and the differences between implementation and reduction.
