چکیده

1 Primary sclerosing cholangitis is a chronic cholestatic syndrome affecting both extrahepatic and intrahepatic bile ducts that is frequently progressive, leading to liver cirrhosis, portal hypertension, and eventually to end-stage liver disease. Primary sclerosing cholangitis is strongly associated with inflammatory bowel disease. The prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (typically ulcerative colitis) among primary sclerosing cholangitis patients is approximately 70-80% while only 2-7.5% of patients with ulcerative colitis will develop primary sclerosing cholangitis. Primary sclerosing cholangitis is accompanied by an increased risk of liver failure, cholangiocarcinoma, and colorectal cancer. Cholangiography is considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of primary sclerosing cholangitis. It is noteworthy that medical, endoscopic, and surgical therapies do not convincingly alter disease progression in primary sclerosing cholangitis patients. Liver transplantation is currently the only available therapeutic modality for patients with end-stage primary sclerosing cholangitis. Abstract

Primary sclerosing cholangitis in Japanese patients: association with inflammatory bowel disease.

To characterize primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) in Japanese patients and its association with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), 155 reported cases of PSC, including 6 cases of our own, were reviewed. The prevalence of IBD was less in Japanese PSC patients than in Western patients (23% versus 62-100%). Japanese PSC patients with IBD were younger (mean age, 33.1 versus 51.8 years) and were m...

Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis: A Review of the Phenotype and Associated Specific Features

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic, progressive cholestatic disease that is associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in approximately 70% of cases. Although the pathogenesis is still unknown for both diseases, there is increasing evidence to indicate that they share a common underlying predisposition. Herein, we review the epidemiology, diagnosis, disease pathogenesis, an...

A patient with primary biliary cirrhosis and ulcerative colitis with progression to primary sclerosing cholangitis and colorectal cancer: A case report

Introduction: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the colon characterized by intermittent exacerbations and remissions. It can be associated with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) or primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and complicated with colorectal cancer (CRC). We describe a complicated case of associaton of PBC and chronic UC, eventually progressed to PSC and CRC. Ca...
