Compliant contact models for rigid body collisions

چکیده
Previous work in rigid body dynamic simulation has relied on rigid body impact models to model collisions. The well-known models due to Newton, Poisson, and Brach, are each based on a deenition of a coeecient of restitution for rigid body impact. The objective of this paper is to develop a new model that overcomes the deeciencies of these models in frictional impacts and to present a formulation to solve problems with multiple concurrent impacts. The model is based on simple mechanical elements that model energy storage and dissipation at each contact. We present an algorithm for simulating concurrent impacts between rigid bodies and illustrate its application with a variation of the peg-in-hole insertion problem.

Analysis of Rigid Body Dynamic Models for Simulation of Systems with Frictional Contacts
The use of Coulomb’s friction law with the principles of classical rigid-body dynamics introduces mathematical inconsistencies. Specifically, the forward dynamics problem can have no solutions or multiple solutions. In these situations, compliant contact models, while increasing the dimensionality of the state vector, can resolve these problems. The simplicity and efficiency of rigid-body model...
متن کاملAnalysis of Frictional Contact Models for Dynamic Simulation
Simulation of dynamic systems possessing unilateral frictional contacts is important to many industrial applications. While rigid body models are often employed, it is well established that friction can cause problems with the existence and uniqueness of the forward dynamics problem. In these situations, we argue that compliant contact models, while increasing the length of the state vector, su...
متن کاملSpatial Compliant Motion of a Rigid Body Constrained by a Frictional Contact
In this paper, we study the quasi-static motion of an elastically suspended, unilaterally constrained rigid body. The motion of the rigid body is determined, in part, by the position controlled motion of its support base and by the behavior of the elastic suspension that couples the part to the support. The motion is also determined, in part, by contact with a frictional surface that both coupl...
متن کاملTwo Interpretations of Rigidity in Rigid Body Collisions
We distinguish between, and discuss the applicability of, two levels of rigidity in rigid-body collision modeling. For rigidity in the strong, force-response, sense collisional contact deformations must be highly localized. The bodies then move according to second order rigid-body mechanics during the collision. Incremental collision laws and most collision models using continuum mechanics for ...
متن کاملHaptic modeling of contact formations and compliant motion
This paper models the effects of different contact formations and compliant motion on haptic rendering, taking into account friction and gravity. When a held rigid object interacts with another rigid object (in a task such as assembly), the force and moment felt by the operator at any instant depend not only on the contact region but also on the type of the contact state and the type of motion ...
