چکیده

This brief paper is written for GPS engineers or systems designers who need to know about space weather. Just as an architect might need to know about hurricanes or tornadoes, characterizing space weather enables designers to understand vulnerabilities in their designs, to create more robust designs, and to determine how best to avoid risk. Space weather is a somewhat arcane topic studied by a few space scientists who, by and large, lack a working knowledge of GPS signals and receivers. On the other hand, GPS and GNSS comprise a growth industry limited only by the imagination and are populated by engineers with little knowledge of space weather. Cornell University’s faculty are award-winning experts in both space weather and GPS receiver design and have an international reputation for their work at the intersection of space weather and GPS. These perspectives motivated the creation of this beginner’s guide. The objective is to advise the practicing engineer of when and how GPS systems may be affected by space weather. The high-level description below is adequate for determining whether further investigation is required. For those wanting to probe the subject more deeply, the bibliography at gps.ece.cornell.edu is recommended. The paper’s organization consists of an overview of space weather, how the ionosphere affects GPS signals, a description of ionospheric climate and weather, and strategies for mitigating the effects of space weather.

Estimation and Analysis of Precipitable Water Vapor Using GPS Data and Satellite Altimeter

Determination of water vapor in the atmosphere plays an important role in forecasting weather conditions and precipitation studies. For this reason, it is very important to study the tropospheric delay, especially the wet component, which is due to the presence of water vapor in the atmosphere. In this paper, the amount of water vapor was estimated by altimeter satellite radiometer and GPS data...

1 COSMIC GPS Ionospheric Sensing and Space Weather

As our civilization becomes more dependent on space based technologies, we become more vulnerable to conditions in space weather. Accurate space weather specification and forecasting require proper modeling which account for the coupling between the sun, the magnetosphere, the thermosphere, the ionosphere and the mesosphere. In spite of the tremendous advances that have been made in understandi...

Space Weather Effects Detected by Gps Based Tec Monitoring

The world-wide use of GPS satellites for navigation and positioning offers the unique chance for permanent monitoring the total electron content (TEC) of the ionosphere on global scale. Based on the analysis of GPS-derived TEC maps computed at DLR/DFD Neustrelitz for the European area on a routine base with a time resolution of 10 min the paper demonstrates the power of this new tool to detect ...

Geomagnetic storm effects on GPS based navigation

The energetic events on the sun, solar wind and subsequent effects on the Earth’s geomagnetic field and upper atmosphere (ionosphere) comprise space weather. Modern navigation systems that use radio-wave signals, reflecting from or propagating through the ionosphere as a means of determining range or distance, are vulnerable to a variety of effects that can degrade the performance of the naviga...

Atmospheric Remote Sensing Using Space-based Radio Navigation Satellites

Given that agricultural cycles, human well-being, economic growth and many societal activities are affected by climate variability, a greater understanding of critical atmospheric parameters (such as refractivity, pressure, temperature and humidity) is of paramount importance. Recently many countries have investigated the feasibility of using the space-based radio navigation satellites of the G...
