چکیده

JANUARY 2003 AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY | S ince its discovery by Madden and Julian (1971, 1972) over two decades ago, the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) has continued to be a topic of significant interest due to its complex nature (Madden and Julian 1994) and the wide range of phenomena with which it interacts. The onset and break activity of the Asian–Australian monsoon system is strongly influenced by the propagation and evolution of MJO events (e.g., Yasunari 1980; Lau and Chan 1986; Hendon and Liebmann 1990a,b). Apart from this significant local influence, there are also important downstream influences that arise from the MJO. For example, the development of persistent North Pacific circulation anomalies during Northern Hemisphere winter has been linked to the evolution and eastward progression of convective anomalies associated with MJO events (e.g., Weickmann 1983; Liebmann and Hartman 1984; Weickmann et al. 1985; Ferranti et al. 1990; Lau and Philips 1986; Higgins and Schubert 1996; Higgins and Mo 1997; Mo 2000). In fact, a link has been shown to exist between rainfall variability along the western United States, including extreme events, and the longitudinal position of MJO convective anomalies (Mo and Higgins 1998a,b; Jones 2000; Higgins et al. 2000; Whitaker and Weickmann 2001). In addition, MJO convective activity has been linked to Northern Hemisphere summertime precipitation variability over Mexico and South America as well as to wintertime circulation anomalies over the Pacific–South American sector (Nogues-Paegle and Mo 1997; Mo and Higgins 1998c; Jones and Schemm 2000; Paegle et al. 2000). Recently, studies have also shown that particular phases of the MJO are more favorable than others in regards to the development of tropical storms/hurricanes in both the Atlantic and Pacific sectors (Maloney and Hartmann 2000; Mo 2000; Higgins and Shi 2001). Finally, the passage of POTENTIAL PREDICTABILITY OF THE MADDEN–JULIAN OSCILLATION

Investigating the Relationship between Drought with Teleconnection Patterns (Case Study: Qara Qom Basin)

Aims & Backgrounds: Drought is a natural feature of an area and in every region that occurs, it leads to economic, social and environmental losses. In this research, the Teleconnection patterns in drought occurrence in Qarh Qom basin has been investigated. Methodology: In this regard, precipitation data of 30 rain gauge and synoptic stations as well as data on 32 numerical indexes of teleconnec...

Global Occurrences of Extreme Precipitation and the Madden–Julian Oscillation: Observations and Predictability

This study investigates 1) the eastward propagation of the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) and global occurrences of extreme precipitation, 2) the degree to which a general circulation model with a relatively realistic representation of the MJO simulates its influence on extremes, and 3) a possible modulation of the MJO on potential predictability of extreme precipitation events. The observatio...

Influence of the Madden–Julian Oscillation on Summertime Cloud-to-Ground Lightning Activity over the Continental United States

Summertime cloud-to-ground lightning strikes are responsible for the majority of wildfire ignitions across vast sections of the seasonally dry western United States. In this study, a strong connection between active phases of the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) and regional summertime lightning activity was found across the interior western United States. This intraseasonal mode of lightning ac...

Impact of Madden–Julian Oscillation upon Winter Extreme Rainfall in Southern China: Observations and Predictability in CFSv2

The impact of Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) upon extreme rainfall in southern China was studied using the Real-time Multivariate MJO (RMM) index and daily precipitation data from high-resolution stations in China. The probability-distribution function (PDF) of November–March rainfall in southern China was found to be skewed toward larger (smaller) values in phases 2–3 (6–7) of MJO, during whi...

The Madden–Julian Oscillation and Its Impact on Northern Hemisphere Weather Predictability

The Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) is known as the dominant mode of tropical intraseasonal variability and has an important role in the coupled-atmosphere system. This study uses numerical model experiments to investigate the influence of the MJO activity on weather predictability in the midlatitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Goddard L...
