چکیده

Since sa infoin may be in t roduced into areas infested with the alfalfa s tem nema tode , we ini t ia ted a s tudy to de te rmine if Ditylenchus dipsaci (K~ihn) Fi l ipjev is pa thogen ic to sa infoin , and what effect t empe ra tu r e has on n e m a t o d e pa thogen ic i ty and rep roduc t ion . G e r m i n a t i n g seeds of sa infoin ( O n o b r y c h i s viciaeJolia Scop. 'Esk i ' and 'Vica ' ) and al fa l fa (Medicago sativa L. 'Ranger ' ) , used as a c o m p a r i s o n , were inocula ted with 25 D. dipsaci per seed. Seedl ings, 100 of each cul t ivar , were g rown in 320 × 215 × 100 m m metal con ta iners of P rovo sand in a g rowth c h a m b e r at 25 C, and the percentages of suscept ible p lants were de te rmined af ter 14 days. Ranger was the most gal led. There were 91, 43, and 43% gal led 'Range r , ' 'Eski , ' and 'Vica ' plants , respect ively. To c o m p a r e the effect of t e m p e r a t u r e on pa thogen ic i ty and r ep roduc t i on of D. dipsaci on Eski sa infoin and Ranger alfalfa, ge rmina t ing seeds were inocula ted with 25 D. dipsaci per seed. Seedl ings, 100 of each cul t ivar , were grown in 320 × 215 × 100 m m

Technical note: utilization of sainfoin by grazing steers and a method for predicting daily gain from small-plot grazing data.

Sainfoin (Onobrychis viciaefolia Scop.) is adapted to the calcareous soils of the southern Great Plains and can provide early season forage that does not induce bloating; however, little is known about performance by ruminants grazing sainfoin. Our objective was to determine the effect of plant growth stage and grazing pressures on potential animal production from sainfoin as predicted from ene...

Stimulatory Effects of Gamma Irradiation on Phytochemical Properties, Mitotic Behaviour, and Nutritional Composition of Sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia Scop.)

Sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia Scop. Syn. Onobrychis sativa L.) is a bloat-safe forage crop with high levels of tannins, which is renowned for its medicinal qualities in grazing animals. Mutagenesis technique was applied to investigate the influence of gamma irradiation at 30, 60, 90, and 120 Gy on mitotic behavior, in vitro growth factors, phytochemical and nutritional constituents of sainfoi...

Large Variability of Proanthocyanidin Content and Composition in Sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia)

Proanthocyanidins (PAs) in sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia Scop.) are of interest to ameliorate the sustainability of livestock production. However, sainfoin forage yield and PA concentrations, as well as their composition, require optimization. Individual plants of 27 sainfoin accessions from four continents were analyzed with LC-ESI-QqQ-MS/MS for PA concentrations and simple phenolic compound...

Nitrogen effect on Nodulation of Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and Sainfoin (Onobrychis vicilifolia Scop.)

Biological Nitrogen fixation is one of the two sources of nitrogen (N). Most nitrogen fixation in agriculture takes place in the Fabaceae family which can form symbiotic relationships with Rhizobium spp. if it is present in the soil. This study reexamines the effect that nitrogen (N) application has on nodulation number on the rooting zone of two small seeded legumes, alfalfa (Medicago sativa L...

Yield and nutritive value of sainfoin (Onobrychis vicifolia Scop.) populations in different cuttings

Sainfoin (Onobrychis vicifolia Scop.) is one of the most important forage legumes cultivated as high quality forage. Fifty three species have been identified in this genus in Iran. A field experiment was conducted using randomized complete block design to compare yield and forage quality of 20 populations of sainfoin in Isfahan Agricultural and Natural Resources Center, Iran during 2013 – 2014....
