چکیده

An understanding of the arctic climate system has become a high priority research area because of its importance to global climate change (IPCC 1990). Unfortunately, our studies of this region are in their infancy and we lack a broad knowledge of the Arctic. This deficiency is due to the scarcity of observations and the difficulties in remotely sensing arctic clouds from satellites (Curry et al. 2000).

Evaluation of Mixed-Phase Cloud Parameterizations in Short-Range Weather Forecasts with CAM3 and AM2 for Mixed-Phase Arctic Cloud Experiment

Mixed-phase clouds dominate low-level Arctic clouds in cold seasons and have a significant impact on the surface energy budget. However, the treatment of mixed-phase clouds in most current climate models is crude because the detailed microphysical processes involved in mixed-phase clouds are not completely understood, primarily owe to the paucity of cloud observations in the past. Improving mix...

Tests and improvements of GCM cloud parameterizations using the CCCMA SCM with the SHEBA data set

A GCM cloud microphysics parameterization is tested and improved using the CCCMA single-column model with cloud properties obtained at the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean experiment (SHEBA) during the period of November 1997 to September 1998. The ECMWF reanalysis water vapor profile is scaled with rawinsonde data so that the new relative humidity profiles are compatible with rawinsonde...

Evaluating Mesoscale Model Predictions and Parameterizations Against SGP ARM Data on a Seasonal Timescale

A major objective of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program is to test and improve parameterizations for cloud and radiative processes. A common strategy adopted for this purpose within the ARM science team is to utilize single-column models (SCMs) driven by appropriate boundary conditions derived from observations, so as to isolate the parameterizations themselves. In practice, ac...

Testing Cloud Microphysics Parameterizations in NCAR CAM5 with ISDAC and M-PACE Observations

[1] Arctic clouds simulated by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Community Atmospheric Model version 5 (CAM5) are evaluated with observations from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Indirect and Semi-Direct Aerosol Campaign (ISDAC) and Mixed-Phase Arctic Cloud Experiment (M-PACE), which were conducted at its North Slope of Alaska site i...

Sensitivity of sea ice to physical parameterizations in the GISS global climate model

[1] The GISS coupled model is used to investigate the sensitivity of sea ice to each of the following parameterizations: (1) two sea ice dynamics (CF: cavitating fluid; VP: viscousplastic), (2) the specification of oceanic isopycnal mixing coefficients in the Gent and McWillams isopyncal mixing (GM), and (3) the wajsowicz viscosity diffusion (WV). The large-scale sea ice properties are highly s...
