چکیده

Infections with human retroviruses, others than the HIV virus, are not very well known in Romania, despite the fact that screenings for HTLV I and II are constantly performed in blood donation centers. The authors draw attention on the possible severe consequences that may occur in chronic infections with these viruses by presenting the case of a 35 year-old male, who was known to be infected with HTLV I virus for several years and who consequently developed adult cell leukemia. The authors also plead for the development of an algorithm for the detection, surveillance, monitoring and treatment of HTLV infections, throughout interdisciplinary cooperation between infectious disease specialists, hematologists, dermatologists. The authors strongly recommend the development of means to promote prevention by: securing blood transfusions; forbidding breastfeeding in women who tested positive for HTLV; using condoms in order to prevent sexual transmission in discordant couples.

Human T Lymphotropic Virus Type I (HTLV-I) Oncogenesis: Molecular Aspects of Virus and Host Interactions in Pathogenesis of Adult T cell Leukemia/Lymphoma (ATL)

The study of tumor viruses paves the way for understanding the mechanisms of virus pathogenesis, including those involved in establishing infection and dissemination in the host tumor affecting immune-compromised patients. The processes ranging from viral infection to progressing malignancy are slow and usually insufficient for establishment of transformed cells that develop cancer in only ...

“HTLV-I Infection” Twenty-Year Research in Neurology Department of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV) types 1 and 2 belong to the Oncorna group of retroviridae, a large family of viruses, grouped initially by pathogenic features, but later revised on the basis of genome structure and nucleotide sequence. HTLV-I was the first discovered human retrovirus to be associated with a malignancy in 1980. The malignancy, first described by Uchiyama and co-worker...

Ocular manifestations and pathology of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma associated with human T-lymphotropic virus type 1

The human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1), endemic in defined geographical areas around the world, is recognized as the etiologic agent of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL), or HTLV-1. ATL is a rare adult onset T-cell malignancy that is characterized by the presence of ATL flower cells with T-cell markers, HTLV-1 antibodies in the serum, and monoclonal integration of HTLV-1 proviru...
