چکیده

We investigate the beneet of Tabu Search for satissability (SAT) and constraint satisfaction problems (CSP) and compare it to the more frequently used random walk heuristic. We argue, that a more deterministic direction of search as done with Tabu Search is worth considering also for SAT and CSP. We give experimental evidence that Tabu Search can be used to eeciently guide local search procedures like GSAT and WSAT for SAT and the min connicts heuristic for CSP. The algorithms are tested on randomly generated problems and hard graph coloring instances from the DIMACS benchmark test set. Additionally, we give some explanation on the value of Tabu Search.

Combination of Local Search Strategies for Rotating Workforce Scheduling Problem

Rotating workforce scheduling is a typical constraint satisfaction problem which appears in a broad range of work places (e.g. industrial plants). Solving this problem is of a high practical relevance. In this paper we propose the combination of tabu search with random walk and min conflicts strategy to solve this problem. Computational results for benchmark examples in literature and other rea...

Analysis of Random Walks Using Tabu Lists

A tabu random walk on a graph is a partially self-avoiding random walk which uses a bounded memory to avoid cycles. This memory is called a tabu list and contains vertices already visited by the walker. The size of the tabu list being bounded, the way vertices are inserted and removed from the list, called here an update rule, has an important impact on the performance of the walk, namely the m...

Tabu Search for SAT

In this paper tabu search for SAT is investi gated from an experimental point of view To this end TSAT a basic tabu search algorithm for SAT is introduced and compared with Selman et al Random Walk Strategy GSAT procedure in short RWS GSAT TSAT does not involve the ad ditional stochastic process of RWS GSAT This should facilitate the understanding of why simple local search methods for SAT work...

Tabu Search for Maximal Constraint Satisfaction Problems

This paper presents a Tabu Search (TS) algorithm for solving maximal constraint satisfaction problems. The algorithm was tested on a wide range of random instances (up to 500 variables and 30 values). Comparisons were carried out with a min-connicts+random-walk (MCRW) algorithm. Empirical evidence shows that the TS algorithm nds results which are better than that of the MCRW algorithm.the TS al...

Linking Search Space Structure, Run-Time Dynamics, and Problem Difficulty: A Step Toward Demystifying Tabu Search

Tabu search is one of the most effective heuristics for locating high-quality solutions to a diverse array of NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems. Despite the widespread success of tabu search, researchers have a poor understanding of many key theoretical aspects of this algorithm, including models of the high-level run-time dynamics and identification of those search space features tha...
