چکیده

The theme of this Special Issue is asymmetries in language acquisition, and the contributions present evidence for either the presence or the absence of a production/comprehension asymmetry in child language. The authors focus on various areas of linguistics, ranging from phonology and syntax to semantics and pragmatics, using a variety of empirical methods. Although the contributions do not agree on the existence of asymmetries or on the explanations for observed asymmetries, they all address the relation between children’s production of a particular linguistic form and their comprehension of this form. As this Special Issue shows, the relation between children’s performance in language production, their performance in language comprehension, and their knowledge of grammar may not be as straightforward as has often been assumed.

A Unified Explanation for Production/comprehension Asymmetries

In the past decades, research on language acquisition has identified several asymmetries between production and comprehension in various languages and in various areas of language. Many of these asymmetries came as a surprise to their investigators, because no asymmetries are expected under the traditional view of the grammar as a directioninsensitive system of rules. The aim of this paper is t...

Optimal Acquisition: Why Children’s Language Production Can Exceed Their Comprehension

This paper discusses a developmental paradox, namely that children’s performance in language production sometimes exceeds their performance in language comprehension. This yields a puzzle for most theories of language acquisition. If a child produces a linguistic form correctly, this is considered to be evidence that the child possesses the relevant grammatical knowledge. However, if the child ...

Asymmetries in Language Use Reveal Asymmetries in the Grammar

According to the classical view, the nature of the grammar is independent of its use. A puzzle for this view is the observation that in language acquisition production sometimes precedes comprehension. Children who use subject-object status to determine word order in production not necessarily use word order to determine subject-object status in comprehension. On the basis of results from first...

Unfaithful conduct : A competence - based explanation of asymmetries between production and comprehension

Children’s production skills in their native language do not always develop in tandem with their comprehension skills. In some cases, children’s comprehension is adult-like, while their production is still poor. In other cases, the situation is the other way around and children’s production is adult-like, while their comprehension is still poor. Optimality Theory is able to provide a competence...
