An axiomatic approach to clustering line-segments

چکیده
In this paper we consider the problem of clustering line-segments into new ones. The clustering-hierarchy gives an answer to the question what original line segments are combined into larger ones. Such a clustering is deened as a hierarchical ordering of a set of line-segments. Criteria on a clustering-method are presented. The diierence between edges and lines in relation to scale-invariant clustering is demonstrated. Existing approaches are evaluated using the presented criteria. It is shown that these approaches do not meet desirable criteria such as scale-invariance. A new method is described that adheres the formulated criteria. Finally an experiment is presented that illustrates the usefulness of the new method.

A Lean Manufacturing Roadmap for an Automotive Body Assembly Line within Axiomatic Design Framework
In this paper we are to present a practical application of Axiomatic Design (AD) methodology, as a roadmap to lean production, in redesigning a car body assembly line. Axiomatic Design theory provides a framework to simplify the whole problem. According to the AD principles, a hierarchical structure has been developed. The developed structure originated in lean manufacturing principles and exis...
متن کاملLINE-SEGMENTS CRITICAL SLIP SURFACE IN EARTH SLOPES USING AN OPTIMIZATION METHOD
In this paper the factor of safety (FS) and critical line-segments slip surface obtained by the Alternating Variable Local Gradient (AVLG) optimization method was presented as a new topic in 2D. Results revealed that the percentage of reduction in the FS obtained by switching from a circular shape to line segments was higher with the AVLG method than other methods. The 2D-AVLG optimization meth...
متن کاملAn axiomatic approach to soft learning vector quantization and clustering
This paper presents an axiomatic approach to soft learning vector quantization (LVQ) and clustering based on reformulation. The reformulation of the fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm provides the basis for reformulating entropy-constrained fuzzy clustering (ECFC) algorithms. This analysis indicates that minimization of admissible reformulation functions using gradient descent leads to a broad varie...
متن کاملUnifying Single-Linkage and Max-Sum Clustering
To unify the motivating principles behind Max-Sum and Single-Linkage clustering, we consider an axiomatic approach to the theory of Clustering. We discuss abstract properties of clustering functions, following the framework of Kleinberg, [7]. By relaxing one of Kleinberg’s clustering axioms, we sidestep his impossibility result and arrive at a consistent set of axioms. We suggest to extend thes...
متن کاملA Uniqueness Theorem for Clustering
Despite the widespread use of Clustering, there is distressingly little general theory of clustering available. Questions like “What distinguishes a clustering of data from other data partitioning?”, “Are there any principles governing all clustering paradigms?”, “How should a user choose an appropriate clustering algorithm for a particular task?”, etc. are almost completely unanswered by the e...
