There is no doubt that the tar produced by condensing cigarette smoke is carcinogenic for mice (see Day, 1967). However, lung epithelium differs from the skin and the condensate differs from fresj cigarette smoke in, for example, the absence of the gaseous components. It appeared worth while to us, therefore, to attempt to produce lung carcinomas in mice by allowing them to breathe a mixture of cigarette smoke and air for a prolonged period.
