Simulation Components

The fundamental concept of simulation dates back thousands of years to the ancient Egyptians and the famous Chinese war strategist SunTzu. Notwithstanding these initial attempts at replicating ancient battlefields, current day machine-based modelling and simulation (M&S) found its roots in the early 20 Century. During this dawning era, the majority of M&S efforts were carried out in isolation. One may not find this so surprising when one considers the fundamental definition of a model: a representation of an element of the real world for a specific purpose. Working in isolated domains on specific applications, M&S developers created bespoke solutions to precise problems.
