Constituent family size and compound stress assignment in English

چکیده

There have been claims in the literature (e.g. Marchand 1969, Bell 2008) that variable stress assignment to English compounds is influenced by the size of the constituent families, i.e. the number of compounds that share the same left or the same right constituent. This paper tests this claim empirically on the basis of a large amount of data from three different corpora. The expected effects can be found in some form (and to varying degrees) in all three sources, alongside of other effects that have been held to be responsible for compound stress assignment. The results can be interpreted as evidence against deterministic rule-based approaches to compound stress and lend independent evidence to a model in which compound stress assignment emerges from the lexicon.1

Compound stress assignment by analogy: the consituent family bias

This paper tests the hypothesis that stress assignment to English compounds works on the basis of analogy. In particular, the role of the constituent family, i.e. the set of compounds that share the same right or left constituent with a given compound, is investigated. On the basis of large amounts of data from three different corpora it is shown that the tendency towards a certain kind of stre...

Large constituent families help children parse compounds.

The family size of the constituents of compound words, or the number of compounds sharing the constituents, has been shown to affect adults' access to compound words in the mental lexicon. The present study was designed to see if family size would affect children's segmentation of compounds. Twenty-five English-speaking children between 3;7 and 5;9 were asked to explain the meaning of existing ...

On Stress and Linguistic

In this essay a new theory of stress and linguistic rhythm will be elaborated, based on the proposals of Liberman (1975).' It will be argued that certain features of prosodic systems like that of English, in particular the phenomenon of "stress subordination", are not to be referred primarily to the properties of individual segments (or syllables), but rather reflect a hierarchical rhythmic str...
