چکیده

Biological treatment ofhazardous wastes has the potential for effective, practical, and economical remediation ofsome Superfund sites and other hazardous waste problems. Some biological hazardous waste treatments may also be applicable for preventing the occurrence of future hazardous waste sites. From a public health perspective, this technology may allow for the treatment of environmental hazardous wastes such that potential human health effects are ameliorated, or indeed prevented, specifically by reducing the amount and toxicity of hazardous substances. Considering the importance of the environmental concerns associated with hazardous wastes, specifically from a public health perspective, a conference on the "Biodegradation of Hazardous Wastes" was held April 9-10, 1990, at Utah State University. The main purpose of the meeting, and the focus of this report, was to provide an up-to-date review of some of the biological degradation research currently available and undergoing development and to provide a forum to discuss this technology's impact on human health and the environment. In addition, current and future use ofbiological treatment technologies

Biodegradation of bilge waste from Patagonia with an indigenous microbial community.

Oily residues that are generated in normal ship operation are considered hazardous wastes. A biodegradation assay with autochthonous microbiota of Bilge Waste Oily Phase (BWOP) was performed in a bioreactor under controlled conditions. Petroleum, diesel oil, and PAH degraders were isolated from bilge wastes. These bacteria belong to the genus Pseudomonas and are closely related to Pseudomonas s...

Phospholipid fatty acid analysis to monitor the co-composting process of olive oil mill wastes and organic household refuse.

The co-composting of olive oil mill wastes and household refuse was followed for 5 months. During the thermophilic phase of composting, the aerobic heterotrophic bacteria (AHB) count, showed a significant rise with a slight regression of fungal biomass. In the same way, phospholipid fatty acids PLFAs common in bacteria, showed a significant increase of hydroxyl and branched PLFAs. The evaluatio...

Bioremediation of Uranium Contaminated Soils and Wastes

Contamination of soils, water, and sediments by radionuclides and toxic metals from uranium mill tailings, nuclear fuel manufacturing and nuclear weapons production is a major concern. Studies of the mechanisms of biotransformation of uranium and toxic metals under various microbial process conditions has resulted in the development of two treatment processes: (i) stabilization of uranium and t...
