Migrating and Wintering Waterfowl Select WRP Easements to Meet Annual Life-cycle Needs

چکیده

Through a Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP) partnership, University of Missouri investigators used GPS satellite transmitters to track and assess wetland habitat use by midcontinent mallards, including the contribution of Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) easements to habitats selected during the non-breeding season. Investigators used multinomial discrete choice models that accounted for variance in wetland type.

Developing a wintering waterfowl community baseline for environmental monitoring of Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island

In 2004, the Atlantic Ecology Division of the US Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Research and Development began an annual winter waterfowl survey of Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay. Herein, we explore the survey data gathered from 2004 to 2011 in order to establish a benchmark understanding of our waterfowl communities and to establish a statistical framework for future environmenta...

Conserving migratory land birds in the new world: do we know enough?

Migratory bird needs must be met during four phases of the year: breeding season, fall migration, wintering, and spring migration; thus, management may be needed during all four phases. The bulk of research and management has focused on the breeding season, although several issues remain unsettled, including the spatial extent of habitat influences on fitness and the importance of habitat on th...

Agricultural Seed Biomass for Migrating and Wintering Waterfowl in the Southeastern United States

Waterfowl frequently acquire high-energy agricultural seeds in harvested and unharvested croplands during migration and winter. Estimates of agricultural seed biomass in harvested and unharvested corn, soybean, and grain sorghum fields do not exist or are outdated for the southeastern United States. Therefore, we estimated seed biomass in 105 harvested and 59 unharvested corn, soybean, and grai...

Long-term Trends and Changes in Numbers and Distribution of Some Wintering Waterfowl Species along the Swedish Baltic Coast

Regular counts of wintering waterfowl have been undertaken as a part of the International Waterfowl Census (IWC) and the National Swedish Environmental Monitoring Program since 1964. After the first years, a network of annually surveyed sites was established for the calculation of annual indices. Country-wide surveys (also including aerial counts) were undertaken 1971–1974, 1987–1989, 1992–1993...

Forage plants of an Arctic‐nesting herbivore show larger warming response in breeding than wintering grounds, potentially disrupting migration phenology

During spring migration, herbivorous waterfowl breeding in the Arctic depend on peaks in the supply of nitrogen-rich forage plants, following a "green wave" of grass growth along their flyway to fuel migration and reproduction. The effects of climate warming on forage plant growth are expected to be larger at the Arctic breeding grounds than in temperate wintering grounds, potentially disruptin...
