چکیده

Microbubble whispering gallery resonators have the potential to become key components in a variety of active and passive photonic circuit devices by offering a range of significant functionalities. Here, we report on the fabrication, optical characterization, and theoretical analysis of lead-silicate glass, optical microbubble resonators. Evanescent field coupling to the microbubbles was achieved using a 1 μm diameter, silica microfiber at a wavelength of circa 775 nm. High Q-factor modes were efficiently excited in both single-stem and two-stem, lead-silicate glass, microbubble resonators, with bubble diameters of 38 μm (single-stem) and 48 μm (two-stem). Whispering gallery mode resonances with Q-factors as high as 2.3×10 5 (single-stem) and 7×10 6 (two-stem) were observed. By exploiting the high-nonlinearity of the lead-silicate glass, this work will act as a catalyst for studying a range of nonlinear optical effects in microbubbles, such as Raman scattering and four-wave mixing, at low optical powers.

Optical microbubble resonator.

We develop a method for fabricating very small silica microbubbles having a micrometer-order wall thickness and demonstrate the first optical microbubble resonator. Our method is based on blowing a microbubble using stable radiative CO(2) laser heating rather than unstable convective heating in a flame or furnace. Microbubbles are created along a microcapillary and are naturally opened to the i...

Preparation and Studies of Structural and Thermo-mechanical Aspects of Some Special Glasses and Glass-ceramics

Glasses and glass-ceramics (GCs) used for sealing, coating and high voltage applications belong to a special class of materials in which among other requirements, matching of thermal expansion coefficient with that of metal as closely as possible up to set temperature is an important consideration. In this paper I shall concentrate on some indigenous efforts carried out in my laboratory on the ...

Dispersion controlled highly nonlinear fibers for all optical processing at telecoms wavelengths

We review our recent progress in the development of lead silicate glass fibers with high nonlinearity and tailored near-zero dispersion at telecommunication wavelengths, encompassing holey, all-solid microstructured and W-type fiber designs. The fabrication techniques and relative merits of each fiber design are described in detail. The optical properties of the fabricated fibers are assessed b...

Pockels effect of silicate glass-ceramics: Observation of optical modulation in Mach–Zehnder system

Silicate glass has been used for long time because of its advantages from material's viewpoint. In this paper, we report the observation of Pockels effect by Mach-Zehnder interferometer in polycrystalline ceramics made from a ternary silicate glass via crystallization due to heat-treatment, i.e., glass-ceramics. Since the silicate system is employed as the precursor, merits of glass material ar...
