A comparison between single and multi-channel CSMA/CD protocols of equivalent capacity

چکیده
Abstract This paper presents the comparison between single channel and multi-channel Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols for broadband optical Local Area Networks. The multi-channel protocol exploits the Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) techniques (each channel corresponds to a different optical wavelength allocated dynamically) and it is based on the Ethernet standard, using a Carrier Sense Multiple Access / Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) scheme. Average delay and efficiency are taken as performance criteria for the simulation of the protocols. Comparison of single channel and multi-channel protocols with different total capacity has been carried out using a MAC protocol simulator. We show that multi-channel protocols make a more efficient use of the available capacity than single channel protocols. This paper illustrates the advantage of distributing total capacity over several channels with an appropriate protocol.

Performance Comparison of Single and Multi-channel Csma-cd Wireless Networks Using Equilibrium Point Analysis
A fundamental defect of simple CSMA-CD multiple access scheme is that messages meant for different stations can collide in the common channel. In this paper, a multi-channel form of CSMA-CD network, created by CDMA signalling, is analyzed. Its performance is shown to be superior to that of a single channel CSMA-CD network.
متن کاملMulti-channel Medium Access Control Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey
Extensive researches on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have been performed and many techniques have been developed for the data link (MAC) layer. Most of them assume single-channel MAC protocols. In the usual dense deployment of the sensor networks, single-channel MAC protocols may be deficient because of radio collisions and limited bandwidth. Hence, using multiple channels can significantly ...

Local area networks comprising several parallel broadcast channels are considered, describing medium access control layer protocols capable of handling all available channels in an integrated fashion. The performance of multiple access protocol such that one channel is accessed according to a token scheme, while the remaining are accessed according to a CSMA/ CD scheme is computed using an appr...
متن کاملOn the Capacity of p-Persistent CSMA
The CSMA-based algorithms constitute a heart of contemporary wireless media access control technology. In last decades, various enhancements have been introduced to basic CSMA schemes, first of all, in order to support collision avoidance. At the same time, the performance analysis of the p-persistent CSMA has gained a renewed interest recently since the behavior of many CSMA protocols might be...
