A Constructivist Approach to Game-Based Language Learning: Student Perceptions in a Beginner-Level EFL Context

چکیده

Thisarticleprovidesinformationonanactionresearchprojectinalow-levelEFLsettinginJapan. Theprojectaimswereto1)fosterspokencommunicationskillsand2)helpstudentsengagewith theirownlearning.Theprojectinvestigatedtheapplicabilityofboardgamesasamediatingtoolfor authenticcommunicationaspartofawiderTBLTapproachtolanguagedevelopmen.Quantitative andqualitativedatawascollectedfrom115firstandsecondyearJapaneseuniversitystudentsvia aquestionnaireattheendofaseven-weekcourseusingtheexperimentalmethodology.Responses to thequestionnaire indicated that the frameworkwasperceived tobevaluable inboth fostering communicativeskillsandimprovingstudentengagement.Methodologicalimprovementswerealso suggested.Implicationsapplicabletoteachersworkinginsimilarcontextsarediscussed,aswellas possibleimprovementsforfutureimplementations.
