چکیده

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to (1) summarize published literature on biological perchlorate/nitrate destruction; (2) perform bench-scale tests to characterize biodegradation parameters (i.e., salinity, pH, temperature, nutrients, electron donor, etc.), improve perchlorate/nitrate destruction rates, and evaluate mechanisms to generate and retain biomass; and (3) validate bench-scale results through pilot-scale operation, demonstrate recycle and reuse of biologically treated brine, and assess any impact on distribution water quality.

Microbial Degradation of Perchlorate: Principles and Applications

Perchlorate (ClO4) release into the environment has occurred primarily in association with its manufacture and use in solid rocket propellant. When released into groundwater, perchlorate can spread over large distances because it is highly soluble in water and adsorbs poorly to soil. Two proven techniques to remove perchlorate from drinking water are anaerobic biological reactors and ion exchan...

Reduction of perchlorate and nitrate by salt tolerant bacteria.

Spent regenerant brine from ion-exchange technology for the removal of perchlorate and nitrate produces a high salt waste stream, which requires remediation before disposal. Bioremediation is an attractive treatment option. In this study, we enriched for salt tolerant bacteria from sediments from Cargill salt evaporation facility (California, USA), the Salton Sea (California, USA), and a high d...

Isomorphous Substitution of P(V) in Natural Clinoptilolite: Evalution of the Product for Removal of NO3-, NO2- and F - from Aqueous Solutions

Nitrate is an anion of major importance particularly in biological areas. Excessive amounts in water supplies indicate pollution from sewage or agricultural effluents. The effects of excessive quantities of nitrate in water are well known. In this research structural modification of natural clinoptilolite by isomorphic substitution was performed. Isomorphously substituted zeolite was prepar...

Biological reduction of perchlorate in ion exchange regenerant solutions containing high salinity and ammonium levels.

The most promising technologies to remove perchlorate from water are ion exchange and biological reduction. Although successful, ion exchange only separates perchlorate from water; it does not eliminate it from the environment. The waste streams from these systems contain the caustic or saline regenerant solutions used in the process as well as high levels of perchlorate. Biological reduction c...

Mixed moderate thermophilic bioleaching of Cu, Mo and Re from molybdenite concentrate: effects of silver ion, medium and energy sources

This study evaluates the effects of different additives such as silver ion, medium and energy sources on the efficiency of mixed moderate thermophilic bioleaching approach to extract Cu, Mo and Re from molybdenite concentrate containing 0.98% Cu, 1.56% Fe, 53.84% Mo, and 0.055% Re. Molybdenite was the major phase of Mo-bearing mineral and chalcopyrite, covellite and pyrite were distinguished as...
