چکیده

Dimension reduction techniques are widely used for the analysis and visualization of complex sets of data. This paper compares two recently published methods for nonlinear projection: Isomap and Curvilinear Distance Analysis (CDA). Contrarily to the traditional linear PCA, these methods work like multidimensional scaling, by reproducing in the projection space the pairwise distances measured in the data space. However, they di6er from the classical linear MDS by the metrics they use and by the way they build the mapping (algebraic or neural). While Isomap relies directly on the traditional MDS, CDA is based on a nonlinear variant of MDS, called Curvilinear Component Analysis (CCA). Although Isomap and CDA share the same metric, the comparison highlights their respective strengths and weaknesses. c © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Sequential Principal Curves Analysis

This report includes all the technical details of the Sequential Principal Curves Analysis (SPCA) in a single document. SPCA is an unsupervised nonlinear and invertible feature extraction technique. The identified curvilinear features can be interpreted as a set of nonlinear sensors: the response of each sensor is the projection onto the corresponding feature. Moreover, it can be easily tuned f...

Spatial Distance Preservation based Methods for Non- Linear Dimensionality Reduction

The preservation of the pairwise distances measured in a data set ensures that the low dimensional embedding inherits the main geometric properties of the data like the local neighborhood relationships. In this paper, distance preserving technique namely, Sammons nonlinear mapping (Sammon‟s NLM) and Curvilinear Component Analysis (CCA) have been discussed and compared for non-linear dimensional...

A robust non-linear projection method

This paper describes a new nonlinear projection method. The aim is to design a user-friendly method, tentativ ely as easy to use as the linear PCA (Principal Component Analysis). The method is based on CCA (Curvilinear Component Analysis). This paper presen ts tw o improvements with respect to the original CCA: a better beha vior in the projection of highly nonlinear databases (like spirals) an...

Extension of ISOMAP for Imperfect Manifolds

As one of the most promising nonlinear dimensionality reduction techniques, Isometric Mapping (ISOMAP) performs well only when the data belong to a single well-sampled manifold, where geodesic distances can be well approximated by the corresponding shortest path distances in a suitable neighborhood graph. Unfortunately, the approximation gets less and less precise generally as the number of edg...
