We constrain the parameterized post-Einsteinian framework with binary pulsar observations of orbital period decay due to gravitational wave emission. This framework proposes to enhance the amplitude and phase of gravitational waveform templates through post-Einsteinian parameters to search for generic deviations from general relativity in gravitational wave data. Such enhancements interpolate between general relativity and alternative theory predictions, but their magnitude must be such as to satisfy all current experiments and observations. The data that currently constrains the parameterized post-Einsteinian framework the most is the orbital period decay of binary pulsars. We use such observations to bound the magnitude of post-Einsteinian parameters, which will be critical when gravitational waves are detected and this framework is implemented.

Neutron Star Masses from Arecibo Timing Observations of Five Pulsar–White Dwarf Binary Systems

We have detected relativistic and/or kinematic post-Keplerian parameters of no fewer than five pulsar–white dwarf binary systems in long-term timing observations at Arecibo. We discuss the resulting constraints on pulsar and companion masses. The general trend is that the pulsar mass measurements are compatible with the canonical value of 1.35M⊙, but in most cases somewhat higher masses are pre...

1 99 5 A Tighter Test of the Local Lorentz Invariance of Gravity Using PSR J 2317 + 1439

Gravity being a long-range force, one might a priori expect the Universe's global matter distribution to select a preferred rest frame for local gravitational physics. The phenomenology of preferred-frame effects, in the strong-gravitational field context of binary pulsars, is described by two parametersˆα 1 andˆα 2. These parameters vanish identically in general relativity, and reduce, in the ...

Testing the strong equivalence principle with the triple pulsar PSR J 0337 þ 1715

Three conceptually different masses appear in equations of motion for objects under gravity, namely, the inertial mass, mI , the passive gravitational mass, mP , and the active gravitational mass, mA. It is assumed that, for any objects, mI 1⁄4 mP 1⁄4 mA in the Newtonian gravity, and mI 1⁄4 mP in the Einsteinian gravity, oblivious to objects’ sophisticated internal structure. Empirical examinat...

Pulsar Kicks and Spin Tilts in the Close Double Neutron Stars Psrj0737-3039, Psrb1534+12 and Psrb1913+16

In view of the recent measurement of the scintillation velocity for PSRJ0737-3039, we examine the complete set of constraints imposed on the pulsar B natal kicks (magnitude and orientation) and predict the most favorable pulsar kick velocity and spin tilt for both isotropic and polar kicks. Our analysis takes into account both currently unknown parameters: the orientation of the orbital plane o...
