Environmental Dependencies in the Luminosity Function of Galaxies

چکیده
The evidence is becoming strong that the luminosity function of galaxies varies with environment. Higher density, more dynamically evolved regions appear to have more dwarfs per giant. The situation is becoming clearer as a result of wide field imaging surveys with the CanadaFrance-Hawaii and Subaru telescopes and spectroscopy of faint dwarfs with the Keck telescope. We report here on extensive observations of the small but dense NGC 5846 Group. The faint end of the luminosity function rises relatively steeply in this case.

Evaluation of New MOND Interpolating Function with Rotation Curves of Galaxies
The rotation curves of a sample of 46 low- and high-surface brightness galaxies are considered in the context of Milgrom's modi_ed dynamics (MOND) to test a new interpolating function proposed by Zhao et al. (2010) [1] and compare with the results of simple interpolating function. The predicted rotation curves are calculated from the total baryonic matter based on the B-band surface photometry,...
متن کاملA Divided Universe: Red and Blue Galaxies and their Preferred Environments
Making use of scaling relations between the central and the total galaxy luminosity of a dark matter halo as a function of the halo mass, and the scatter in these relations, we present an empirical model to describe the luminosity function (LF) of galaxies. We extend this model to describe relative statistics of early-type, or red, and latetype, or blue, galaxies, with the fraction of early typ...
متن کاملTracing Galaxy Evolution by Their Present-day Luminosity Function
Galaxy luminosity functions are derived for different morphological types and various colors of galaxies, to trace the evolutionary effects which a priori should be different for void and supercluster galaxies. We also analyse how the galaxy group content changes in the large-scale environment. One of the principal results is the conclusion that the evolution of spiral galaxies is almost indepe...
متن کاملThe Optical Luminosity Function of Virialized Systems
We determine the optical luminosity function of virialized systems over the full range of density enhancements, from single galaxies to clusters of galaxies. The analysis is based on galaxy systems identified from the Nearby Optical Galaxy (NOG) sample, which is the largest, all-sky catalog of objectivelyidentified bound objects presently available. We find that the B-band luminosity function o...
متن کاملThe Nearby Optical Galaxy Sample: the Local Galaxy Luminosity Function
In this paper we derive the galaxy luminosity function from the Nearby Optical Galaxy (NOG) sample, which is a nearly complete, magnitude–limited (B ≤14 mag), all–sky sample of nearby optical galaxies (∼6400 galaxies with cz < 5500 km s−1 ). For this local sample, we use galaxy distance estimates based on different peculiar velocity models. Therefore, the derivation of the luminosity function i...
