چکیده

Plasmonics is concerned with the interaction between electromagnetic radiation and conduction electrons at metallic/dielectric interfaces and has been a hot research area since 2000. Plasmonics is now attracting more research activities because a plasmonic nanostructure is one of the most promising candidates to serve as the light scattering and trapping agent to reduce the physical thickness of current solar cells while maintaining the optical thickness. In this patents review, we describe the basic mechanisms of plasmonic thin-film solar cells, summarize the common design and fabrication techniques, and discuss the future prospects.

Improving the optical properties of thin film plasmonic solar cells of InP absorber layer using nanowires

In this paper, a thin-film InP-based solar cell designed and simulated. The proposed InP solar cell has a periodic array of plasmonic back-reflector, which consists of a silver layer and two silver nanowires. The indium tin oxide (ITO) layer also utilized as an anti-reflection coating (ARC) layer on top. The design creates a light-trapping structure by using a plasmonic back-reflector and an an...

Plasmonic Solar Cells, a New Way to Enhance Energy Conversion Efficiency: Analysis and Modeling of Effect of Metal Geometry

In this article, the effect of plasmonic properties of metal nanoparticles with different shapes, and moreover, their plasmonic-photonic interaction, on solar cell performance were investigated and simulated. Because of low conversion efficiency and then high cost of solar cells, it is difficult to commercialize and replace them with conventional energy resources. But in recent years, the plasm...

Design of Silicon Nano-Bars Anti-Reflection Coating to Enhance Thin Film Solar Cells Efficiency

In this paper a novel anti-reflection (AR) coating based on silicon nano-bars is designed and its impact on the performance of crystalline silicon (c-Si) thin-film solar cells is extensively studied. Silicon nano-bars with optimized size and period are embedded on top of the active layer, under a 100nm Si3N4 layer. As a result of the proposed layer stack, an inhomogeneous intermediate layer wit...

Plasmonic nanostructure design for efficient light coupling into solar cells.

We demonstrate that subwavelength scatterers can couple sunlight into guided modes in thin film Si and GaAs plasmonic solar cells whose back interface is coated with a corrugated metal film. Using numerical simulations, we find that incoupling of sunlight is remarkably insensitive to incident angle, and that the spectral features of the coupling efficiency originate from several different reson...

A Simple Optical Model Well Explains Plasmonic-Nanoparticle-Enhanced Spectral Photocurrent in Optically Thin Solar Cells

A simple optical model for photocurrent enhancement by plasmonic metal nanoparticles atop solar cells has been developed. Our model deals with the absorption, reflection, and scattering of incident sunlight as well as radiation efficiencies on metallic nanoparticles. Our calculation results satisfactorily reproduce a series of experimental spectral data for optically thin GaAs solar cells with ...
