An Empirical Study of State Encoding in Tabu Search

Recently, the Tabu Search (TS) metaheuristic has been applied to a number of combinatorial optimisation problems with success [1, 14, 15, 18, 19]. TS is an enhancement of the well known hill climbing heuristic and it searches the entire neighbourhood for a solution with a cost better than the current cost. If a local optimum is encountered, it will accept the solution whose cost deteriorates that of its predecessor the least. Therefore moves which do not improve the solution can be accepted allowing the algorithm to escape local optima. In order to avoid cycling through previous solutions, cycle avoidance is implemented by a memory structure known as the tabu list [8, 10]. In this study, we undertake to examine the nature of the tabu list to determine its role in tabu search.
