Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling with Genetic Algorithm

The purpose of this paper presents a heuristic method based in genetic algorithms (GA) for resource-constrained project scheduling. The problem studied was of the scheduling of projects that share the same pool of resources. This situation is very common in some environments of project, i. e., construction P&D units. Fluctuation in resource usage can result in many problems, such as the need in hire more labor or lay off excess labor, the idleness or excess resources, and low productivity. A set of cases was developed to text the proposed algorithm. The same cases was solved through an integer linear programming (ILP) model, a commercial project management software (MS Project) and other deterministic algorithms found in the literature review. This procedure has permitted the evaluation of the proposed algorithm in terms of computational efficiency and results effectiveness. The results are detailed in the text and are made suggestions of possible improvements.
