Longitudinal Stability of Short Bunches in Storage Rings with Strong Longitudinal Focusing*
نویسنده
چکیده
In the BESSY VSR project, the variable bunch length storage ring, two high gradient accelerating structures at 1.5 and 1.75 GHz will be phased such that long and short bunches can be stored simultaneously. The longitudinal stability of the short bunches is investigated taking into account the shielded CSRand a purely inductive impedance. Multi particle tracking studies and numerical solutions of the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation show that threshold currents for short bunches do not follow the simple scaling law which was found for long bunches. The inductive impedance can even lower the thresholds for the instability. With an 80 times increased accelerating gradient and reasonable assumptions on the inductive impedance for shorter bunches stable operation can be expected with bunches 1.8 ps long (RMS-value) and 0.8 mA current. According to the calculations and operating in a dedicated low-α mode will produce stable 40 A bunches with 400 fs length.

Single Particle Tracking for Simultaneous Long and Short Electron Bunches in the Bessy Ii Storage Ring∗
A scheme where 1.5 ps and 15 ps long bunches (rms) can be stored simultaneously in the BESSY II storage ring has recently been proposed (BESSY [1]). This paper presents simulations of single particle beam dynamics influenced by superconducting cavities used for the strong longitudinal beam focusing. The effect of RF jitter on (very short) bunches is investigated and results are discussed. Furth...
متن کاملLONGITbDINAL EFFECTS OF COLLIDING BEAM SPACE CHARGE FORCES IN ELECTRON-POSITRON STORkE RINGS WITH CROSkNG ANGLES*
In electron-positron storage rings in which the orbits of the colliding beams cross at a substantial angle, a phase-dependent longitudinal force is exerted on the particles of each beam by the bunches of the other. The effects of this force on both incoherent and coherent longitudinal particle motion are investigated. These effects impose a limit on the number of particles which can be stored i...

BESSY VSR, a scheme where 1.7 ps and 15 ps long bunches (rms) can be stored simultaneously in the BESSY II storage ring has recently been proposed [1]. The strong longitudinal bunch focusing is achieved by superconducting high gradient RF cavities. If the bunch fill pattern exhibits a significant inhomogeneity, e.g. due to gaps, transient beam loading causes a distortion of the longitudinal pha...
متن کاملShort High Charge Bunches in the SLAC Linac*
These days the linac at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) is mainly an injector for the PEP-II rings. But besides the electrons and positrons for PEP-II, it provides a 30 GeV electron or positron beam to the end of the linac into the FFTB (Final Focus Test Beam) area or creates a test beam for the A-Line. In the FFTB tunnel there are two plasma experiments installed, which have demo...
