چکیده

Toward the general goal ofpreventing ankle injuries in snowboarding accidents, the E. Wang objective of this project to develop a dynamic system model of a snowboarder and Assistant Professor, assess which model parameters, particularly those attributed to the boot, most Department of Mechanical Engineering, strongly influenced ankle deflections during a forward fall. To satisfy this objective, University of Nevada, a system model was created that included the rider, the boots, the snowboard, and Reno, NV 89557 the snow as components. Through dynamic simulations, peak ankle deflections were computed over realistic ranges of input parameter values for each of the model components. Defining sensitivity as the total change in peak ankle deflection over the M. L. Hull range of a particular parameter studied, results indicated that the peak ankle deflecProfessor of Mechanical Engineering and tion was most sensitive to the boot stiffness. Although lower, the sensitivity of the Chair of Biomedical Engineering, peak ankle deflection to the snow model parameters was still significant, being roughly Department of Mechanical and halfof the boot sensitivity. Increases in both snow stiffness and snow damping caused Aeronautical Engineering, higher ankle deflections. Variations in both snowboard stiffness and anthropometric University of California, Davis, CA 95616 parameters had little effect. Due to the strong dependence ofankle deflection on boot stiffness, the potential exists for mitigating the ankle injury problem through judicious design of the boot.

Ankle-foot prosthesis with articulated human bone endoskeleton: force-deflection and fatigue study.

The durability and function of three ankle-foot prostheses fabricated using a naturally articulated, fresh cadaveric human bone endoskeleton set in a fiber reinforced rubber shell were studied. Radiographic and force-deflection analyses before and after cyclic dorsiflexion for 5,000, 100,000, and 3 million cycles revealed no structural or functional changes. The endoskeleton foot compared favor...

Numerical Analysis of Grease Film Characteristics in Tapered Roller Bearing Subject to Shaft Deflection

The shaft deflection is one of critical factors that deteriorate the grease lubrication state inside the tapered roller bearings (TRBs). So, in this paper, on the premise of the TRB subjected to the combined loads and the shaft is deflected, the grease lubrication model at the TRB contacts was constructed, in which the interaction loads, linear and angular displacements of the bearing parts wer...

The influence of passive-dynamic ankle-foot orthosis bending axis location on gait performance in individuals with lower-limb impairments.

BACKGROUND Passive-dynamic ankle-foot orthoses are commonly prescribed to augment impaired ankle muscle function, however their design and prescription are largely qualitative. One design includes a footplate and cuff, and flexible strut connecting the two. During gait, deflection occurs along the strut, with the greatest deflection at a central bending axis. The vertical location of the axis c...

Equipment and methods for laboratory testing of ankle-foot prostheses as exemplified by the Jaipur foot.

A load deflection and a cyclic loading apparatus capable of measuring dorsiflexion/plantarflexion, pronation/supination, internal/external rotation, and cyclic dorsiflexion (60 cycles per minute) of ankle-foot prostheses are described. A test protocol was developed to assess the functional parameters of the Jaipur ankle-foot prosthesis before and after prolonged cyclic loading, with the simulta...

Analytical Analysis of Capacitive Pressure Sensor with Clamped Diaphragm (RESEARCH NOTE)

Abstract   In this paper analytical analysis of capacitive pressure sensor with clamped diaphragm is presented. Mechanical and electrical properties of the sensor are theoretically analyzed based on theory of thin plates with small deflection and the results are evaluated by use of finite element analysis. The central deflection and capacitance values under uniform external pressure are calcula...
