Abstract:

ABSTRACT: Brain abscess is a localized parenchymal infection of the brain , which may develop from three sources:(1)by direct extension of preexisting infection in the paranasal and mastoid sinus.(2) from cranial trauma,(3) by hematogenous spread. Brain abscess occurs more frequently in the young and in males. With more common utilization of anaerobic cultures,it has become apparent that a great many brain abscesses contain anaerobic or microaerophilic organisms such as streptococci, diphtheroids, fusiformis , or bacteroides, either alone or in conjunction with aerobic bacteria. Symptoms and signs of a brain abscess may be due to infection as well as to the space occupying brain lesion. The differential diagnosis of brain abscess include meningitis , encephalitis cerebral chronic subdural hematoma , intracerbral hematoma. Currently , The CT scan is the optimal diagnostic test and MRI is highly reliable in brain abscess when it is directed toward eradication of infection. and elimination of the increased intranial pressure by surgery and medical treatment.
