Abstract:

Drought stress is a serious adverse factor that limits sunflower growth and productivity. The stress induces a range of physiological and biochemical responses in sunflower. So, evaluation of defense systems is important for producing resistant cultivars. In this study, physio-biochemical changes and antioxidant enzymes activitiesof six sunflower lines were evaluated under normal and irrigation at 60 and 40% of the field capacity using a randomized complete block design with three replications. Different characteristics such as relative water content (RWC), chlorophyll a and b contents, carotenoid and proline contents, lipids peroxidation and accumulation of malon dialdehyde (MDA), as well as activity of antioxidative enzymes like guaiacol peroxidase (GPX), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT) and glutathione reductase (GR) were studied. The results showed significant differences among sunflower lines for physio-biochemical and enzymes activity under drought stress. According to the results, the lines C104 and RHA266 showed the better tolerance to drought stress. The founding of this study can be useful in sunflower breeding programs for producing resistant cultivars to drought stress.

Morphological and molecular responses of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) lines to drought stress

Drought stress is a serious adverse factor limiting growth and productivity of sunflower. Evaluation of defense systems is important for producing resistant cultivars. In this study, some agro-morphological and molecular characteristics of six sunflower lines were evaluated under normal and irrigation at 40 and 60% of field capacity in randomized complete block design (RCBD). The results showed...

Differences in antioxidant, morphological and biochemical responses to drought stress in different cultivars of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

Drought stress is the most common environmental stress that can significantly influence crop productivity. In this study, morphological and biochemical properties of 17 genotypes of common bean were evaluated under different levels of drought stress and the most sensitive and tolerant genotypes were identified using multivariate analysis. The results indicated that morphological and biochemical...

Physiological and antioxidant enzymatic activity responses of rootstock of sapodilla to salinity stress

Sapodilla is one of the important fruit crops in tropical area which has problem with seed germination. So Manilkara hexandra (kherol) is generally used as a rootstock for sapodilla. This experiment was performed to assess the morphological changes and antioxidant enzymatic activity of Manilkara hexandra seedling under salinity condition. A pot experiment was carried out in a greenhouse using d...

Plant Responses to Drought and Stress Tolerance

In the natural environment plants are well adapted to minimize damages which only occurs under extreme conditions. In the frame of “physiological window” mild drought induces in plants regulation of water loss and uptake allowing maintenance of their leaf relative water content within the limits where the photosynthetic capacity shows no or little changes. But severe drought induces in plants u...

Physiological and biochemical responses of Hypericum perforatum to salt stress and salicylic acid spraying

Salinity is one of the main obstacles to the successful production of agricultural products. Hormonal compounds such as salicylic acid (SA) as plant growth regulators can have different physiological and biochemical effects in plants under salt stress. In present research, the effects of different concentrations of sodium chloride (2, 6 and 10 dS/m) and foliar application of SA (0, 0.25 and ...
