Background and Objective: Different studies have investigated the link between helicobacter pylori and extra digestive diseases such as idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. However, the relationship between ITP and H pylori is less clear. Most of the studies have focused on H pylori eradication in chronic ITP, so we focused on the effect of H pylori eradication on chronicity of ITP in adult patients with ITP. Materials and Methods: Eighty five patients with acute ITP whose platelet count were less than 30x109/L were enrolled to the study. Urea breath test (UBT) was carried out for all the patients and based on its results; the patients were divided into 3 groups: Group I: H pylori positive patients who underwent standard triple therapy. Evaluation of H pylori eradication for this group was carried out one month and six months after the treatment. Group II: ITP patients negative for H pylori and Group III: ITP patients' positive for H pylori but without eradication therapy. Results: 52(61.2%) patients were female and 33(38.8%) were male with mean age of 34.8±12.2 years. There was no significant difference between the mean age and gender in different groups. No significant difference was seen in mean platelet count at the baseline among the groups, but there was a significant statistical difference in mean platelet between the groups at the end of the first month. However, a significant difference was not seen in mean platelet count in months 2 to 6. Chronicity in group I was statistically less than the group III. Also, the chronicity rate in non-infected ITP patients was lower than the H pylori positive patients (P=0.03). Likewise, the chronicity rate was lower in the intervention group than in the control group (P=0.035). Conclusion: Our results show that eradication of H pylori can reduce the chronicity rate in adult patients with ITP. Further studies on larger number of patients with longer follow-up are recommended.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES There are data consistent with an association between idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) and Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection. In addition, a significant increase of platelet count following HP eradication has been reported in a proportion of ITP patients. We describe here our experience on the efficacy of anti-HP treatment in ITP patients. DESIGN AND METHOD...

Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Helicobacter pylori Infection in Korea was revised in 2013 and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) was enlisted as a target for H. pylori eradication therapy with high level of evidence and strong recommendation grade. Clinical studies have steadily reported the rise of platelet count after H. pylori eradication roughly in a half of the patien...

Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an autoimmune hematological disorder characterized by auto antibody-mediated platelet destruction. Although the main cause of ITP remains unclear, but its relationship with some infection was demonstrated. In recent years, many studies have demonstrated improvement of platelet counts in ITP patients after treating Helicobacter pylori infection. The a...

BACKGROUND A relationship between Helicobacter pylori infection and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) has previously been reported. We determined the prevalence of H pylori infection in Japanese patients with chronic ITP and the effect of its eradication on platelet count. METHODS The study population comprised 53 Japanese adults with chronic ITP and a platelet count of less than 100 ...

We initiated this study to investigate whether combining Helicobacter pylori eradication with immunosuppressive therapy provides an additional benefit to patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) that has relapsed or has not responded to steroid and/or danazol therapy in patients who have H. pylori infection. Thirty- four patients with chronic ITP that had relapsed or failed to st...

BACKGROUND AND AIM A beneficial effect of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication in patients with H. pylori-positive idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) has been reported by several investigators; however, it was not clear whether the recovered platelet count after H. pylori eradication was maintained for a long period. METHOD Thirty-eight ITP patients who were examined for H. pylo...
