Predicting distribution of Eurasian Lynx (Lynx lynx) using an ensemble modeling approach: A Case Study: Saveh Zarandieh Kharaghan Area, Markazi Province

نویسنده

چکیده مقاله:

Adequate knowledge about suitable habitats for wildlife is essential to prevent habitat destruction and extinction of species and for their conservation and management. The Eurasian lynx is one of the mostly distributed cats in Asia. In this study, we applied an ensemble habitat suitability modeling approach, using ten predictor variables to model Eurasian Lynx’s habitat suitability in Saveh Zarandieh Kharaghan Area, Markazi Province. Due to the high value of the area under the curve index (AUC > 0.9) for Maximum Entropy, Random Forest, Boosted Regression Tree, and Generalized Linear Model, these models were used to produce the final distribution model of the target species. Based on the ensemble model, 53.22% of Saveh Zarandieh Kharaghan Area were identified as suitable for this species. According to the results, distance to residential areas, distance to river and availability of prey were identified as the most important variables, affecting the distribution of Eurasian Lynx. This study indicated that the Eurasian Lynx habitats need more protection.

Scent-marking behaviour and social dynamics in a wild population of Eurasian lynx Lynx lynx.

Scent-marking is widespread among mammals and has been observed in many felid species. Although the behaviour is well-described, little is known about its function in wild felid populations. We investigated patterns of scent-marking and its role in intra- and intersexual communication among resident and non-resident Eurasian lynx Lynx lynx by observing interactions among wild lynx at natural ma...

Large-Scale Genetic Structuring of a Widely Distributed Carnivore - The Eurasian Lynx (Lynx lynx)

Over the last decades the phylogeography and genetic structure of a multitude of species inhabiting Europe and North America have been described. The flora and fauna of the vast landmasses of north-eastern Eurasia are still largely unexplored in this respect. The Eurasian lynx is a large felid that is relatively abundant over much of the Russian sub-continent and the adjoining countries. Analyz...

Prey density, environmental productivity and home-range size in the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx)

Variation in size of home range is among the most important parameters required for effective conservation and management of a species. However, the fact that home ranges can vary widely within a species makes data transfer between study areas difficult. Home ranges of Eurasian lynx Lynx lynx vary by a factor of 10 between different study areas in Europe. This study aims to try and explain this...

Investigations on reproductive physiology in the male Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx).

This study characterized (in vivo) morphological and functional parameters of reproductive organs of adult male lynx (n = 3) prior to, during, and after the breeding season (n = 3). Size and morphology of the reproductive tract were monitored by transcutaneous (testes) and transrectal (accessory sex glands) ultrasonography. Semen was collected by electroejaculation. Ejaculate volume, sperm numb...

Conservation of the Eurasian Lynx (Lynx lynx) in a fragmented landscape – habitat models, dispersal and potential distribution

The expansion of a recovering population – whether re-introduced or spontaneously returning – is shaped by (i) biological (intrinsic) factors such as the land tenure system or dispersal, (ii) the distribution and availability of resources (e.g. prey), (iii) habitat and landscape features, and (iv) human attitudes and activities. In order to develop efficient conservation and recovery strategies...
