The comparison of alpha power, peak alpha frequency, frontal alpha asymmetry between irritable bowel syndrome and healthy people

چکیده مقاله:

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic functional gastrointestinal disorder that is characterized by abdominal pain or discomfort and changed intestinal habits. The aim of This study was the comparison of features of brain oscillations in alpha frequency band by using rest-electroencephalography (EEG) between patients with IBS and healthy control. 11 IBS patients (7 female and 4 male) and 11 healthy (7 female and 4 male), gender and age-matched, were selected and brain oscillations were recorded by a 64-channel EEG at rest in eye-closed condition. Alpha power, peak alpha frequency and frontal alpha asymmetry were calculated and analyzed by fast Fourier transform and independent t test. The results showed that in IBS group, alpha power average (t= -2.56, p= 0.02) is higher and peak alpha frequency (t= 0.37, p= 0.028) and frontal alpha asymmetry (t= 2.7, p= 0.014) are lower than healthy control. our findings indicated the difference in cortical oscillations and its characteristic features between IBS and healthy control, which may serve as a biomarker and prognostic tools for IBS treatments.

The validity of individual frontal alpha asymmetry EEG neurofeedback.

Frontal asymmetry in alpha oscillations is assumed to be associated with psychopathology and individual differences in emotional responding. Brain-activity-based feedback is a promising tool for the modulation of cortical activity. Here, we validated a neurofeedback protocol designed to change relative frontal asymmetry based on individual alpha peak frequencies, including real-time average ref...

EEG alpha power and alpha power asymmetry in sleep and wakefulness.

Asymmetry of waking electroencephalography (EEG) alpha power in frontal regions has been correlated with waking emotional reactivity and the emotional content of dream reports. Little is known regarding alpha asymmetry during sleep. The present study was performed to compare alpha power and alpha power asymmetry in various brain regions across states of sleep and wakefulness. Waking and sleep E...

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder and changes in frontal alpha asymmetry.

OBJECTIVE Since the clinical picture of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) in the Luteal phase of the menstrual cycle is characterized by extreme negative affect, we predicted and obtained a change in frontal cortical EEG alpha asymmetry, which has been shown to be an index of affect. METHOD We observed two monthly cycles for five women diagnosed as having PMDD and one monthly cycle for f...

Evaluating the relationship between irritable bowel syndrome and stress

Introduction: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional disorder of the gastrointestinal system characterized by special gastrointestinal symptoms without organic cause. The etiology of IBS is not clearly known but individuals with IBS mainly report symptoms compatible with psychopathologic disorders, abnormal personality traits and psychological distress. Objective of this study was to ev...

Putative EEG measures of social anxiety: Comparing frontal alpha asymmetry and delta–beta cross-frequency correlation

The goal of the present study was to examine whether frontal alpha asymmetry and delta-beta cross-frequency correlation during resting state, anticipation, and recovery are electroencephalographic (EEG) measures of social anxiety. For the first time, we jointly examined frontal alpha asymmetry and delta-beta correlation during resting state and during a social performance task in high (HSA) ver...
