BACKGROUND Exacerbation of asthma during travel to remote regions may lead to devastating consequences. The course of asthma in travelers and the risk factors for disease exacerbation during travel have not been studied. METHODS We screened 5835 consecutive travelers and identified 203 patients with asthma. Before travel, all enrollees were assessed for presumed risk factors for asthma exacer...
BACKGROUND Asthma is the one of the major causes of sudden death in Japan. Postmortem diagnosis of asthma has been based on morphological findings in lungs, but it histological evidence, was also reported that the biochemical markers such as total and specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) are useful. CASE REPORT We present here a case of fatal asthmatic death. A Japanese male in his thirties, compl...
A 14-year-old boy with severe asthma was treated with prednisone and disodium cromoglycate with considerable subjective improvement, though there was persistent airways obstruction. After several weeks' freedom from symptoms he died in a severe attack of nocturnal asthma. Necropsy findings suggested that hypersecretion had been occurring in die medium-sized airways for several days before death.
The thoracic cage appears to be large during attacks of asthma. Lung volume measurements by body plethysmography and helium dilution have suggested that total lung capacity may be increased during an acute attack of asthma, but doubt has been cast on the accuracy of these measurements in the presence of airflow obstruction. The change in total lung capacity has therefore been investigated durin...
The frequency and characteristics of chest pain and non-respiratory symptoms were investigated in patients admitted with acute asthma. One hundred patients with a mean admission peak flow rate of 38% normal or predicted were interviewed using a questionnaire. Chest pain occurred in 76% and was characteristically a dull ache or sharp, stabbing pain in the sternal/parasternal or subcostal areas, ...
The effects on the peak expiratory flow rate of the drug sequences, placebo-salbutamol-disodium cromoglycate and placebo-disodium cromoglycate-salbutamol administered via a nebuliser were examined in 35 children with asthma. Twenty children were each examined once within 4 hours of admission to hospital with an acute attack of asthma, and the remaining 15 children were examined later in the att...
STUDY OBJECTIVE To evaluate whether providing a spacer device and a single, brief demonstration regarding its proper use would result in earlier resolution of asthma symptoms, improved school attendance, and decreased frequency of unscheduled medical visits for asthma among children receiving noncontinuous care in an urban emergency department (ED). DESIGN Randomized controlled trial. SETTI...
BACKGROUND Routine addition of ipratropium bromide to beta-agonist therapy in acute asthma is of uncertain benefit. OBJECTIVE This study was carried out to evaluate: (1) whether nebulized ipratropium (0.5 mg) plus salbutamol (2.5 mg) (Combivent) confers additional bronchodilation over nebulized salbutamol (2.5 mg) alone in patients with acute asthma and (2) whether adjustment for prognostic i...
