Background and Aims: Hepatitis C virus is one of the viral infections which is mainly transmitted by blood transfusion. Patients with thalassaemia frequently need blood transfusion and are in danger of HCV infection. In most cases of infection (85%) the virus evades the immune system and establishes a chronic infection that may lead to cirrhosis and liver carcinoma. Liver is the main site of HC...

We used a reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to obtain the genotypes of circulating hepatitis C virus (HCV) in patients from a Gastro-Hepatology Unit in the city of Salvador (Bahia State) in northeastern Brazil. Viral RNA was detected in 83 (65.4%) of 127 anti-HCV seropositive serum samples. Positivity was significantly associated with alterations in levels of aspartate am...

The first detected case of genotype 4 of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) in Salvador, Bahia, is described. RT-PCR tests were used to detect HCV-RNA, and LIPA was used for genotyping. Genotype 4 responds poorly to treatment, and it is therefore important to actively search for people who have been in contact with it.

background and objectives: hiv-1 and hcv infections are life threatening problems in patients who receive blood products. serological methods have proven useful in detecting these infections, but there are setbacks that make it challenging to detect these infectious agents. by the advent of nucleic acid testing (nat) methods, especially in multiplex format, more precise detection is possible. m...

Backround: Various viruses have been implicated in the cause and pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, which has been recognised as a cause of some autoimmune diseases, and which has been described as sometimes presenting with rheumatic manifestations indistinguishable from RA, might be a candidate. Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of HCV infection i...

Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is gaining increasing attention as a global health crisis. HCV may lead to a substantial health and, consequently, economic burden over the next 10-20 years. Aim of the work: This research seeks to demonstrate antiviral activity of naturally derived extracts on HCV. Aqueous extracts of Milk thistle (MSE) as well as lyophilized juice of ginger were t...

Both hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses (HBV and HCV) infection are common in HIV-infected individuals as a result of shared risk factors for acquisition. A serological study for HBV and HCV was performed in 251 HIV-positive individuals from Medellín, Colombia. A qualitative RT-PCR for HCV was done in 90 patients with CD4+ T-cell count < 150 per mm(3). Serological markers for HBV infection wer...

Genetic recombination between different strains of Hepatitis C virus (HCV) was investigated in three chimpanzees inoculated experimentally with factor VIII concentrate containing HCV subgenotypes 1a, 1b, 2b and 3a. A 750 bp long fragment from the HCV envelope region was amplified by RT-PCR and quasispecies were isolated by plasmid cloning. Nucleotide sequences derived from isolated quasispecies...

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major public health problem with more than 130-180 million people infected worldwide. Several studies in different populations have reported the association of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genotypes, and HCV viral load, and genotypes. The aim of this study was to investigate a possible association between HLA class I and II alleles in HCV-infected patients and heal...
