1. IntroductionWith the emergence of next generation mobile communications technology, known as “5G”, telecommunications industry faces a major disruption and transformation. 5G technology aims to interconnect people globally create real-world wireless networked societies (Mitra & Agrawal, 2015).

In this paper an overview is given of the current status of 5G industry standards, spectrum allocation and use cases, followed by initial investigations of new opportunities for spectrum sharing in 5G using cognitive radio techniques, considering both licensed and unlicensed scenarios.
