For the Bruns–Gubeladze polytopal K-theory, we describe a new series of three dimensional balanced Col-divisible polytopes. Also we calculate the corresponding elementary groups and as a corollary obtain an expression of the polytopal K-groups in terms of the Quillen K-groups.

We show that lattice polytopes cut out by root systems of classical type are normal and Koszul, generalizing a well-known result of Bruns, Gubeladze, and Trung in type A. We prove similar results for Cayley sums of collections of polytopes whose Minkowski sums are cut out by root systems. The proofs are based on a combinatorial characterization of diagonally split toric varieties.

We compute the canonical class of certain Rees algebras. Our formula generalizes that of Herzog and Vasconcelos. Its proof relies on the fact that the formation of the canonical module commutes with subintersections in important cases. Using symmetric algebras we simplify (and slightly strengthen) the Bruns-Eisenbud-Evans “generalized principal ideal theorem” on the height of order ideals of nonminimal generators in a module. We also obtain a simple proof and an extension of a result by Kwieciński, which estimates the height of certain Fitting ideals of modules having an equidimensional symmetric algebra.
